i went for my first gig this weekend with my traktor s4 and laptop anyway it was going great but then some dj came into the booth and said ' yo ill teach you how to use the cdj ' why is it that all night club and djs in general why are the stuck in the past using cdj and vinyl mixers !!! seriously can someone tell me what can a cdj do better than a traktor s4 !! it pisses me off a traktor kontrol s4 costs $900 and good cdj and mixer will be like $3000 why pay that ??.to play on cdjs you have to burn music onto cds then play. such a waste of time for the whole thing.
i use sync on the traktor s4 but i can beatmatch its seriously just a waste of time for me so why do djs stay in the past
i understand beatmatching is a skill but what it make a dj better than the other is
there mix the songs they choice and the way they transition

traktor kontrol s4 costs $900 plus $1500 for a decent laptop.

cdsj and mixers are basically bulletproof, dont rely on unstable computers, have many more options when it comes to compatibility for different setups and music mediums, doesnt require setup, can changeover djs without stopping the music... list goes on. if s4 was really so much better im sure most clubs/djs would have caught on!

plus in my experience, most guys who think they can beatmatch on a midi controller cant do it on a turntable for the life of them. they need to realise you need to use your ears rather than your eyes!

Yeah sure beatmatching is easy when the BPM is written on your screen and you go those yellow bits telling you its out of time. (I'm sure they have a more technical name)

Mixing on a controller is unbelievably simple, even without the sync button.

Try it on a turntable.... or a shit CDJ.

I would suggest that it's the same for a lot of new-to-the-game digital DJ's.

Much, much happier in the long run, that I learned using vinyl. Really allows you to mix efficiently on almost any medium.

(Not sure how I'd go on tape decks though! )

I'm no pro DJ but one time I saw an s4 take 20 mins to be set up due to technical difficulties. This may have been a one off but a good enough reason IMO to carry around some CDs or at least a USB if the cdjs support them.
Also CDs are much easier to carry if you are just playing a short gig.

It's a simple RCA connection between the main mixer using whatever spare line input they have.

Unless your having computer issues (which is why you should have CDs with you in the first place) if you can't set it up you shouldn't be using it and definitely shouldnt be playing out with it.

You're correct, better you use the time you save by not beatmatching to learn english.

I just dropped in to say that on Saturday night I played an all vinyl set, the first one I've done in aaaagggesss, fuck it was fun.

It's a sad day, when an "all vinyl set" is a special exception, worthy of posting about.

It amazes me that anyone would lug that much equipment around with them, granted I use serato when gigging out (serato+1200's at home but generally serato+cds at venues to save lugging records/needles/slipmats etc about) but a S4 along with a laptop isn't exactly something you could swing over your shoulder for the rest of the night. Plus sooner or later you are going to turn up to a venue that doesn't have space for your S4, sometimes I struggle to find room for the laptop.

The S4 is great once you learn to use it properly. but all djs should learn to dj with vinyl or cds first.
you need to get the concept and understanding of djing
its not just about beatmatching. in fact that about 10% of the big picture
the sync function on the s4 means anyone can dj. so you're not learning anything, but it still great to use (i have the s4 and love it, but i dj'd for 20 years with vinyl first)
you can run traktor through cdj2000s, without needing the kontrol s4, so even that is a good way to learn more

I'm not more inclined to go to a vinyl only night although I do enjoy seeing dj's play wax on occasion. I just thought it was amusing to try and claim the prestige of playing a vinyl only set even though mp3's were being played.

Anyway, I started on vinyl beatmatching to songs on my ghettoblaster. I had one vinyl record. It costs a bit, but I think learning to have that care and commitment to something really helped me in the long run.

they have some CDJs now, but the residents still play all vinyl. CDJs are mainly used to play their own productions

It is funny that CDJ's are oldskool - I remember a few arguements on here saying that those on CDJ's are cheating when I first came to ITM years ago (2003 maybe?).

To the OP - seriously, make sure you have that CD wallet with your tracks - I understand you can't have the whole collection, but still - you're laptop WILL fail at one point. Or you'll be asked to DJ back to back with another DJ - a lot harder without CDs...

But in the end, output > input, rock the party and all that...

^ I think your point is valid but the ITM crew are acurrate - if you can't play on CDJs/Turntables what are you going to do if the venue says you can't use your controller?

Without starting the whole Vinyl v CDs v Controller debate again (and again.... and again) if you're putting together a set that does the job then go for gold. Just be prepared to be pointed at and sconed if it goes oh so wrong.

nobody is saying dont use traktor to dj with.
what we are saying is hone your skills learning to dj the traditional way, you need to in order to get a feel for actual djing.(ie not just pressing sync)
by all means get trakor scratch and learn on turntables or, learn how to use your laptop/traktor with cdj2000s, then you dont need to take your S4 to a gig.

you dont need to burn cds, you dont need to buy vinyl, you can do everything with traktor, but you do need to learn a lot about the 'art of djing'

i think the point everyone makes is that you should know the basics of using CDJ's at the very least.

I had my laptop freeze half way during a set and wouldnt load a new track. luckily i had cd's with me and mixed off those whilst i restarted my laptop

what would i do if i didnt have cd's with me, or wasnt even able to mix with them?

if the place cant take my equipement then ill will go elsewhere there are plenty of fish in the sea. And you think people will loose it and through shit just because the music stopped due to the program freezing thats all. It not very likely anyway
