What pomrocks said. Not a problem at all in my opinion providing they would be supervised at all times, ear muffs are a necessity and cabins would ideal. Have seen plenty of very young children at a fair few of these type of events now and only once have I seen irresponsibility (child having no ear muffs on the dancefloor).

I don't go to be in the VIP area.. I don't need big breaks, a big song with a buildup and lights and smoke.. all you need is a kickdrum and a good bassline. You don't need any of that other shit. Na, I'm not going for none of those reasons.. I'm just going for the music.

I thought cabins weren't available for punters anymore? Just used for artists etc? I think a friend looked into it last year, but I could be wrong.

The issue of kids at minfestivals is a decisive one I have found. I am ok if things are handled well as has been noted above.
Did anyone else see the kid (around 5 years old), looking totally lost, pushing around a a tiny shopping trolley at the market stage without ear muffs. That was bad parenting.

No kids at festivals where people are munted in any great numbers. No exceptions. "little johnny enjoyed watching the tripper hump the tent." Yeah great parenting.

So by that logic you couldn't take you kids anywhere. At the footy: "little johnny enjoyed watching the drunkin yobo abusing the ref and picking fights with opposing fans" yeah great parenting.

Get of off your high horse (no pun) there is infinately more of the good side of humanity on display at an event like Subsonic than bad. Your kids getting to experience that would be good parenting in my books.

I go to the football with my Dad all the time. By your logic I should bring him to festivals with me. Yeah, you know what, let's all bring parents with us! Let's try and get 4 generations at the one festival!

YES!
IMO as a parent when you have kids shit like going to multi day festivals where alot of the crowd are on the munt/pissed and getting way loose is out of the question.
Unless thay can be properly cared for in your absense you give up your right to go to things like this when you are a parent, if you can't handle that then dont have kids.

Speaking as a punter when I see "parents" dragging their kids around to events such as this I think, you selfish ****s, stay the fuck home with your kids doing kid type things.
And if that makes you bitter because you feel as though you are missing out then it sucks to be your kid.

Alright. So the general consensus appears to be that this event is a bit too loose to bring young-uns to. Fair enough. I had the impression it was all a bit more laid back and community like etc than your run off the mill shit like future music et al.

Having never been I thought it was more like minded folks listening to rad tunes rather than asshats just getting belted for the sake of it cos "its a fucking festival man!"?

That is how I would like to see it stay...

I have the option of bringing a child, or leaving it at home with our parentals. He's at an age where he doesn't percieve too much that we have to be worried about, but we do worry about it.

The vibe of this festival has been like those I grew up with in the yester-years, not the muntfest and collection of dropkicks seen at the various commercialised one day festys here, or even with the growth of PGW, before it crash and burned - the posts on their FB was indeed a testament to the crowd it had begun to attract in the end.

Perhaps a few more families would help keep the vibe of the festival strong with the focus on the music, vibe, comradery for fear of it turning into a 3-day binge opportunity for people - why do you come to these events then? Personally, I'll readily admit I don't like your type.

Being a parent is a responsibility, and my partner and I take that on. It means we pack extra shit, arrange our time and how to best enjoy ourselves, while making it the best experience for our little one. We don't have to stop 'partying' because we spawned. Your responsibility, should always be to your fellow human beings, whether they are sober, wasted, married, single, gay, straight or with children. If you swear around people and kids, you can, but it's not the best manners. If you drink so much you wind up puking everywhere, it's pretty shit for adults...and kids. If you get so wasted, you don't know your ass from your elbow, then that sucks for your mates, who have to babysit you, as well as the kids, we parents have elected to babysit

Have you thought about the fact that other people might be uncomfortable with you bringing your children to the event? IE other punters may want to enjoy what is a adult party where they may be doing things that makes it uncomfortable for them if your kids are there.

I am either or, but I have mates who really find it discomforting to have kids around at bush parties.

I dunno. I'm still not convinced I'd bring the kid along to this thing. TBH I'm just a bit bummed the more "family festival" events have terrible terrible music. Might just ditch the wife and kid, pick up a handful of dingers and shelve all weekend like the rest of the crew in here.

A family-festival? It's not the fucking Easter Show we're talking about here....

It's not going to all of a sudden change into crap music and children's rides.

There are a few revellers out there, like myself, who do have a family and are considering, and have to other festivals before, brought their kids. It's not uncommon, and no one does it to infringe upon anyone's good time.

Grug72, if you are uncomfortable, that's your, or your friends' issues, and maybe you should deal with it, or investigate why it makes you feel uncomfortable? And responsible parents don't just let their kids run amok, into your tents or to rifle through your bag of sweets...Do your friends avoid going to Womadeleide and such because of families?

That was more to Grug. How old is your kid(s)?

The festival is open to kids 12 and under - and with reason, because from that age, even some at 10 are way to impressionable and aware...

If people find it such a burden to keep their drug use out of the eyes of children, they should probably be looking at themselves rather than telling parents how to look after their kids.

See now that was well said.

Now enough of the drug talk in this thread, people are going to get a bad/different impression about this festival.

Lol.

Depends on their temperment really. I think a 3-4 day festival may be a bit much at that stage if they still don't have regular sleep habits. Our kid is really placid and chilled out, so it was actually pretty easy. You'll need a decent pair of ear-muffs made to protect their ears if you take them dancing. The issue that worries me currently is the cutting of teeth

Yes that totally applies to the parents and their direct friends ... unfortunately the other few thousand other loose ****s don't always see things in that such a considerate light.

You and your friends may have the right idea and behaviour but who knows what you'll end up camped next to ...

You're not giving people enough credit. The vast majority of people at these sort of festivals are respectful enough.

There is family camping at a lot of these things as well. The organisers wouldn't allow kids and wouldn't cater to them if their crowd was rough.

Of course you might encounter a few dickheads but thats life. Not like theres a higher number of them at festivals like Subsonic than there is at Westfields or The Easter Show or A Football Match or anything else out in public

not yet (she'll be almost 1 when subsonics on) but id have no issue taking her if she were 4 or 5. as a parent it's be my responsibiilty to ensure her safety, and would have to attend in the knowledge that i have to look after her the whole time, so would not be on the dancefloor at 3 in the morning.
theres enough areas that are family freindly, and mingling in the crowds during the day is fine.
I think the crowd that subsonic attracts are responsble enough (generally), and I would expect non parent punters to use common sense if they are near kids, but I would ensure my kids are not exposed to anything they shouldn't be.
All falls on parents responsibilty

the reality is, if your a prent and choose to take your kid to a festival like subsonic, and then choose to "endulge" and lose all responibility, then you shouldn't be a parent

This. The last thing I want to see at a festival is a kid. Get a sitter or don't bother at all. I hate this selfish, entitled way of thinking where we all have to adjust to a life decision you parents made. Fuck off.

subsonic is not a festival like stereosonic, for example, (where i would never take my kid), its designed as a cultural/ arts/ music event, meaning its not just about loose people on a dnacefloor. Its no differenet to something like Meredith festival, for example, except that it runs through the night too.
There is a time and a place where you could have your kid, no question. But noone said its YOUR responsibility to behave yourself at the expense of those who choose to bring kids, all the responsibilty falls on the parent, if they choose to bring their kid. but the fact that its festival that caters for children aswell as average joe club goer, is something that you just have to accept.
