that looks out of proportion...

When did this 40mm pancake thing start doing the rumour rounds? Just seemed to have dropped in from nowhere. Mind you, I get all my photo goss from this sub-forum so probably no surprise I missed it.

So how does it stack up? Seems the data says it does pretty well, bettering the 35mm f/2 and 50mm f1.4 and 1.8 across the frame. But I'd want a hood to help it out in daylight (defeats the pancake obscurity?), and would also want to check it focuses reasonably close too. I do like the idea of the 40mm walkabout. Preferable to a 30mm or a 50mm, if that's all I was out and about with.

it would be great for as a compact lens but kind of gets neutralised when putting it on such a big body, on a d3100 it would be pretty sweet, albeit a bit long for a crop. id consider one if it was a bit wider

As I was saying to Nis last week, canon paper through canon printer is pretty damn simple when it comes down to calibration.

Yeah, tis a Mk1

I know it ain't as rad as the Mk2, however I'm more than happy with it - considering what I paid ($200 with a Canon battery grip!) I'm well chuffed

16-35 sounds neat, will def check it out - cheers

been busy today testing out the Ilford Galerie range of papers (thanks rancho!) to pick one for the prints in our hallway when we finally get into our apartment in the next couple of weeks.

LOVE the Gold Fibre Silk! great finish & has a kind of warm feel to it. Really good for black & whites

oh and i'm completely in love with the Pro-1. AWESOME printer. Quality is amazeballs. The dynamic range of b&w prints out does my monitor (U2711)

yeah gold fibre silk is certainly the gem of the range. i really like the smooth fine art matt too, but it's not available in sheets.

the haman by hahnemuhle matt cotton smooth is another favourite you can get in sheets

Have been looking in to getting a DSLR for work photos doing property shots and have been offered a camera by our professional photographer, a 1D Mark II with about 120,000 shots on it for $800. Is this an ok price?

nah, bit expensive. the 1d mk ii goes for about $600 on ebay now.

although a great camera, it would be an awful camera for a noobie, and you can get much better cameras that would suit your needs for similar price. eg a 5d classic is also $600 on ebay, but has better image quality and more sensible controls.

you need 6 hands to do just about anything on a 1dmk2 but i love mine

for property shots you just need an UWA such as a canon 17-40 or sigma 12-24. or if you get an aps-c camera (eg canon 60D or something) then a sigma 8-16.

a 1d mk ii is about the worst camera i can think of for property photos.

You could get an entry-level DSLR with 0 shots on it for the same price.
You don't need a bulky 10fps workhorse (or whatever it is) for real estate stuff, I'd think.

Ok so going to pass on that one.

What camera would be recommended then? And where should I buy it from? Budget up to $1500.

best bang for buck imo is the pentax k-5 with its good features and brilliant sony sensor. can pick them up new for under $1000 if you shop around.

add a sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 for under $500 and there's a fantastic real estate setup with change for a carton from $1500.

pentax k-30 is slightly less featured but a brand new model. excellent bang for buck at $849 RRP so maybe close to 800 street?

nikon d7000 and canon 7d are pretty cheap these days too and from all reports are both excellent cameras, with both brands having advantages over pentax due to their big marketshare. i'd say go into a store and play with those cameras and see which one you like. sigma make the 10-20 for all mounts at the same price so it's just body you need to choose.
