A State of Dance
Is electronic dance music really going to the dogs?

Are we all just getting old (at least the ITM community who are regular commenters) or is music becoming so bastardised by its bleeding into the pop scene that it is genuinely ruining what was a wonderful and exciting music scene?

As I jump on InTheMix every morning, there seems to be more and more articles, stories and features that focus on the general integrity of dance music nowadays.

Is it actually becoming that much of an issue?

(What do you think? Post your comment...)

Listen to good music and you won't have this problem.

I started listening in 2000, so now friends are showing me a bunch of stuff from the 90s and things I missed in the early 2000s. You know what? It rocks and there's enough there to keep me going for at least a few years.

true that ... plus with the tiniest bit of effort it's easy to find new stuff that's awesome.

I used to think it was just a case of getting old, but because of said bastardisation, then I'm going to have to agree that the general state of it is pretty shocking.

There are still plenty of decent releases coming out though. You just gotta keep an ear out.

The general state of music is always shocking I think. It seems truly awful at the moment, but then I think back, and I'm pretty sure it was dogs balls 5 years ago, and shit as a **** 5 years before that. I thought the 90s were pretty sweet but I was young and stupid so I can't really say anything about that except SOUNDGARDEN RULED, and the 80s, well, they were fucked but I was so young I didn't even know.

The late 60s and early 70s were actually amazing. Bastards!

Having said that, I have a ton of great music and I love it. I just don't listen to the shit thing (radio) and ignore most of what gets thrown at me.
there must be some mistake I didn't mean to let them take away my soul am I too old is it too late

I reckon it has gotten worse, DJing and producing is obviously a lot cheaper and more accessible than it used to be and as someone said on Twitter the other day, it's no longer how did you make that sound, it's now what preset did you use?

There's still good tunes out if you know where to look but who has the energy to keep up any more? (Not me). The DJ to punter ratio is obviously a lot higher than it used to be and there's a lot more young kids doing it than there used to be so good luck to them I guess

Listen to Dave Clarke's Whitenoise and all your prayers will be answered.

there are only two types of music: 1. good or 2. bad. don't get them confused with each other is the key to success

I love electronic music almost exclusively, I just can't enjoy anything else as much as I do EDM. There are trends, and current trends really don't appeal to me that much, but as was previously said - with a tiny bit of effort you can still find plenty of fresh, exciting tunes to listen to.

Haha, yeah I don't have a problem with new music today. (Except for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUVCQXMUVnI)

I think there's some AMAZING stuff out there being made right now.
Shackleton, Martyn, Four Tet, Above & Beyond, Matthew Dear, etc. are still churning out the goodies.

Maybe it's social media that are allowing 'underground' DJs to be hollaring about shit music publically.
But are they justified in thinking so?

What's great about the current state of affairs is not only all the fresh music, but all the music from bygone years.

The worst sets are those that limit themselves to a genre of very tight time range ... You can easily get away with playing tracks that are 10-15 year old to folks that are fresh to the scene (and aren't trainspotters) and they'll still be blown away.

The golden nuggets of yore will surely standout amongst the mediocrity of any time.

Coolest thing I did this year was grow out of that mindset.

I'm all over the shop, and never really bored.

hip-hop, metal, old music, techy dnb, liquid, grime, burial, sarah blasko, etc.etc.

So maybe that's the key, being a genre whore .
