Did something like that for a school history project where we had to make a boomerang once.

had an old souvenir boomerang made from plywood, sanded the crap out of it til it was back to bare wood again, took a few chunks out of it to make it look like I had an real go at it and had some trouble keeping the jigsaw straight then finally used a soldering iron to dot on some authentic looking aboriginal art.

The day came to hand in the projects, so for some fun they decided we should trek down to the school oval see which boomerang traveled furthest and returned the best.

Not one of the other boomerangs came back

Mine went about 10 meters forward, looped immediately then went 40 meters backwards almost taking out a few of my classmates in the process.

About 5 minutes of heavy handed surface sanding with a belt sander and some dots with a soldering iron.. not that much effort vs sourcing ply, jigsawing a shape out of it then a lot more heavy sanding/filing to make the edges look aerodynamic.
