I got that laptop now Gruso, seems pretty slick, but I cant for the life of me figure out how to turn on the wireless. I've got the bluetooth on but that's no help. Any ideas?

lol, found it in "option drivers", as if that isn't a necessary driver for a laptop <_<

I've got a dumbass windows 7 question... How do I get it so that rather than opening a new copy of a folder/program/thing (if one is already open) it just maximises the open one?

I dun understand. It's going to behave differently depending on the folder/program/thing, but what are you clicking, in which manner are you clicking, and what is the desired outcome exactly?

Oh so you're clicking the same icon you used to open it in the first place? Pro tip: That opens a new program/folder/thing.

To maximise, grab the top border of the window and drag it to the top of the screen. Schnappy. Drag it back down again to restore the windowed size. Now look at me. Now try dragging to the left and right edges of the screen to. Half-schnappy. Now try it nude.

Got a shitload of windows open and want to minimise all but one? Grab that window and shake it. Fwonk.

nigga I've been doubleclicking titlebars going back to Windows 95 and almost all Operation Systems i can think of

also I can see how it could theoretically be useful but I kinda liked in old windowses how maximised windows were locked in place and so nothing would fuck up if you were retarded and accidentally dragged them

oh wait tom do you mean desktop icons or something? yeah some programs will just focus the currently opened window but most don't and just open a new one, some even have a setting so you can tell it which behaviour you want but it's all on a per-program basis, I dunno if there's a global setting to change that or like some tricksy way of crafting your shortcuts or something

not at all helpful but yeah

I double click too. I was just pointing out some of the revolutionary features that Windows 7 brings to your home or home office.

I've used the shake feature twice; once when I first learned about it, and the other time just then. The side snapping thing is pretty ace though, usually use win key + arrow for that.

A mate got a new lenovo lappy yesterday with w7 pre-installed, we were very surprised to find its wireless didn't work out of the box until drivers/updates were loaded.

Ok... I clearly need to re pitch my question.

Basically, I don't want copies of the same thing on my taskbar, i.e: If I doubleclick a link on my desktop that's already open on the taskbar, I just want it to maximise the one that's aready open rather than opening a new copy.

It must be something super simple that i'm missing

just tried doing what you're suggesting, opened a photo on my desktop, then went to re-open it, and it does open a second copy. but if i click on it on the taskbar it opens the original. i attempted helping someones computer last night when drunk. now i'm attempting hungover. it's not working for me.

By maximise, do you mean expand it to fill the screen completely (that's maximising) or do you mean restore (bringing the window back up on the screen after it has been minimised- ie. you can't see the window, it's just an icon on the taskbar)?

For maximising, see previous posts. For restoring, what Spokes said - just click that window's icon on the taskbar.

Double clicking an icon on the desktop will (almost) always open a new version. That's just how Windows works.

I swear that the previous version of W7 I had installed would just re-open the window on the taskbar rather than opening a new copy

I can think of one instance where that is normal. If you have a folder shortcut on your desktop, you can only open one instance of that folder. Open it, minimise it, then double click the icon again, and it just restores the original window. But if you open that shortcut then navigate to a different folder, double clicking the icon again will open the original folder in a new window.

like I said it's a per-program setting and there doesn't seem to be a simple fix

so like spokes said just click them on the taskbar instead, fuck

edit: unless it's like outlook or something that you want this to happen with in which case you're in luck that might work with other ms office apps too i guess
