The Great Gatsby
So, Baz Lurhmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby has just had its first preview released.

Media Player

It's hard to tell what kind of film it will be from that imo. The preview suggests it will be a cross between his adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, and, Moulin Rouge. The visuals definitely pop, but the acting (I know, it's pretty hard to tell from a preview) seems pretty ott.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

looks orright IMO ... I'm keen

It's ALWAYS hard to reproduce such a nuanced novel on the silver screen.

I experienced the Elevator Repair Service's full length live interpretation of this classic (several hours thereof) and loved every minute of it ... Baz is having to condense those several hours (as with every movie adaptation) into 90-120 minutes ... from that snippet we're given here, i don't think he's done particularly badly

In two minds about the visual side. Those NY shots like a FFVII cut scene but the lavish party scenes really pop out I thought.

It looks like a melodrama which he did with Australia and which everyone's promptly forgotten.

fuck yeah, that looks cool (more so if you've read the book and recognised some of the scenes in the trailer).

not into it. he could pull it off, but given his past record it's doubtful. way to ruin a classic, pal.

Dicaprio's acting is off for this one, he looks uneasy in the part... I can tell these things

I'll definitely see it, but if it's the reincarnation of Australia displaced to 1920's New York I'll be pissed off. I enjoyed Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and I recently re-watched Moulin Rouge and actually enjoyed it more than when I first saw it (though it isn't faultless). Baz certainly has a unique visual style and I admire the fact that he tries to re-interpret genres and classical literature. At the same time he can allow some performances of his actors to descend into cartoonish melodrama (Jack Thompson in Australia, and Leguizamo, Wenham, and Roxburgh in Moulin are prime examples).

Melodrama is fine, but it's the over embellishment of the form that often hurts, rather than helps, Lurhmann's films. It becomes an annoying distraction in other words.

I have to admit though, I don't know about Leo playing Gatsby. I picture him as a perfect Nick Carraway, and to have someone like Michael Fassbender as Gatsby. but instead they've made spiderman Carraway :/

Maguire is flat out the wrong choice for Carroway. I'm contemplating not watching it in protest of his being such a fucking god awful choice.

Is it true that JayZ has worked on the soundtrack?

Appreciators of history may be interested to learn Meyer Wolfsheim is apparently based on none other than Arnold Rothstein.
