The Presets Running Out Of Ideas?
Mods feel free to move this, but I'm taking the tenuous link of them being a Sydney product.

Heard the new song on JJJ this morning and thought it sounded remarkably familiar. The progression of it (sans the vocals) sounds a whole lot like Christian Smith & John Selway's 'Total Departure' (particularly the more famous Cirez D remix) complete with wirring upward spiral.

I'm sure the JJJ audience will lap it up, but it's concerning that people will think they've created a prog style 'banger' when it appears to be a direct rip-off of somebody elses work with garbage vocal layered on top. It could all be coincidental, but I'm raising it as a discussion point for people to make up their own mind:

The Presets video is at this link:

Both...

- Use 'Sheppard's Tone' rising as a key tension builder in the track
- Use a minimal 'pluck' bassline looped over 1/2 a bar, playing the key hook of the track

Every minimal techno tune from 2008...

I'm certainly not suggesting it's anywhere near Jet's blatant stealing of Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life'. But it's pretty fooking similar.

And obviously everyone has copied everyone etc but there is a difference between 'sounding' like another song and actually being able to pick out multiple layers of sounds and compare identically with another track.

Edit:

And touche Heist9000.

that shephards tone build was the first thing I noticed too that sounded very familar. it wasnt too bad a track though.

I was impressed with The Presets new direction, but I felt like the track was missing a certain something (which I cant put my finger on) that saved me from really digging it.

I wonder what the non-techno kids will think of it?

I always see the presets tying themselves onto the end of Underworlds long kite tail.

They have a very strong and structured approach to making music and they do well in presenting their own sound to all the formulas of dance music that have been done. It is limited, you can't really come up with a new style of dance music that hasn't been done before.

My favorite Presets song is "If I Know You" which has very similar sounding sounds to Split Enz "I hope I Never" (it at the least has the words)compare the two and you understand what I am talking about. And it is a pretty loose connection that someone else linked those two songs together for me.

For me it is interesting that people are talking about similarities of sounds and comparing sounds to other sounds.

Do you realize that music also has limitations?

As an example; modern Dub Step is just the same as dub step has always been except for the bass sound.

Music has formulas and parameters that have all been explored and cemented.

You wanna say that a song sounds like another and is a rip-off.

Understand the medium and the limitations.

Hope it gets you thinking....
