When it comes to a career the magnitude of Paul Oakenfold it’s hard to encompass one of the true legends of electronic music into just words. For over 3 decades he has elevated and shaped an entire genre and remains one of the leading forces in the global music scene today.

Oakenfold’s stature as a DJ and entertainer has taken him beyond the normal club and festival circuit, playing landmark gigs that have changed the face of electronic music. Highlights include three worldwide tours warming up for Madonna and U2 (with both artists insisting on a DJ set from Paul instead of a support band); performing physically on the Great Wall of China and two sold out dates playing to 30,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl in California.

A year after that first visit to Ibiza, Perfecto was born. “I am focused on DJing and making music this year,” Perfecto boss Paul Oakenfold has said, and his worldwide tour will bring him to Australia in Spring. Part of that renewed focus on DJing led Oakey back to the BBC Radio 1 studio to helm his first Essential Mix in five years over the weekend. Despite the long break, he was the second name ever to record an Essential Mix back in 1993 and was the show’s resident DJ in 1999. The Goa set that he created for the show in 1994 is described by Pete Tong as “perhaps the most famous Essential Mix of them all”, capturing a moment in time (inthemix recently heard Above & Beyond’s Jono Grant quoting it as his introduction to dance music). Oakey’s new two-hour session is titled ‘Fluorescence’, inspired by the sound of his offshoot label Perfecto Fluoro.

“I wanted to make something really special for you guys – to take you on a real journey – and this mix is it,” Oakey writes. “It’s been a few months work to put it together and it’s packed with not only great melodic music but also samples from film, radio, speech and other audio sources. I hope you are going to like it and enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.” The tracklist includes a string of familiar names and lesser-known talents, with Melbourne’s own Ahmet Atasever represented.

Perfecto Fluoro figurehead John Askew recently took to his Facebook page to big-up his boss’s effort. “Sitting in the Perfecto office listening to Paul Oakenfold’s Essential Mix,” Askew wrote. “He’s called it ‘Fluorescence’, and I have to say – it’s incredible. Proper trance. Proper Goa. Proper psy. Proper breaks. Oakie was the second dj ever to record an EM way back in Nov 1993! The man has some impressive history. I'm super keen to see him for the first time at Festival Hall.

Glow in the dark is a perfect example of Oakies classic old school trance sound laced with a little psy.

Any guesses as to how long Oakenfold's set will be?

Support acts haven't been announced yet. Majik tends to announce them close to the event as a surprise. I heard rumours of something awesome, but don't know how reliable that is or if it's confirmed.

As for Oakie's set, I'd hope it'd be 3 hrs. The gig goes for 6 hrs, so it may be only 2 hrs for Oakie. Let's cross our fingers for longer.

My mates reckon Saturday in Sydney was a trainwreck really glad I dodged it in the end. Hope he does better for you guys.

I have heard similar things about the Sydney gig but am not too fussed. Some artists I've seen in the past have received shit reviews from interstate gigs then turned it on for Melbourne.

I'm sure the Future crew will be wanting to ensure this night goes well too. Looking forward to some Oakie goodness, hoping for something similar to his essential mix, but time will tell. I'm still pumped nonetheless!

I'm so keen for this! Definitely not going to let other state's reviews shape my expectations, as stated above. Here's hoping for a set that progresses nicely into something banging not dissimilar to his essential mix.
