Technics turntable mods and servicing
Hi there,

I am based in Melbourne and i service and mod Technics turntables. I can remove ground wire and internally ground them, i install new 2.5 meter OFC RCA's, i can install blue Led's into the strobe, the 33 and 45 buttons and the pop up light, remove the pitch click and quartz locking and calibrate the pitch.

Also i can strip and powdercoat the tops or have them hydroblasted to an alloy shine.

there is nothing i have not done to a Technics deck and also i have a few spare parts.

If there is enough interest in your area, i may travel to your city and do a few sets.

so yeah just putting it out there to see if there is any interest on here :-)

This is a Powdercoated white top with hydroblasted tonearm assembly,Blue leds and it also has a sl1210mk2 pitch indicator.

The stripping and powdercoating cost $55 per deck (please take in mind you will need new pitch indicators and there is a felt on the inside that stops crap getting into the pitch fader) , the hydroblasting cost about $35 per tonearm and leaves a real nice ally looking finish on it.

Im looking to coming upto Brisbane late September early October and ill bring my tools. your looking at $60 per deck to do the Blue Led's, 2.5m of RCA's, remove click and locking at 0% and remove the ground wire and calibration of the pitch (most cases you dont need a new pitch)

i will most likely be staying in the city so if you can drop off and pick up that would be cool if your interested

Not too sure you understand this thread, but no one was asking for help.

Anyway, to the people who actually aren't potatoes. With the production of technics turntables being ceased, do you reckon that modding one like this would lower it's re-sale value in later years?

I'd think it would as people may want the genuine stock standard product?

Well if your turntable is in good to excellent condition, i would not do the colour change or blast the tonearm however i have seen a few turntables that have corrosion, paint chips and other blemishes that have decreased their value as people like to have shiny new looking stuff.

as for the other mods affecting resale value, it comes down to the buyers preference. if you have an audiophile wanting it, they will want it as close to original mint condition as possible and one big thing that will increase a Technics turntable's value and that is if it still has the top dust cover.

check out ebay and see what they are going for, i just sold a mint condition modded one on there for $730 where as stock ones are getting between $500 to $700.

The mods to the 1200 mk2 and the 1210 mk2 are all benefits and most cases add to the value (apart from the blue leds in the strobe and 33 / 45 buttons). nothing worse than that ground wire which was only for stereos in the late 70s and a pain to hook up and somehow gets shorter and shorter, that pop up light that blows and you can read the record whereas the blue led has a life of 50 000 hrs, 2.5 meters instead of 1 meter of RCA lets you put the turntables on the outside of the CDJ's at gigs and at home without stress and also the 2.5 meter cable is OFC, that bloody click when your mixing around that 0% area and the quartz locking thats a pain if your pitch fader is out. also the pitch calibration helps alot with your mixing when both decks are matched.

all in all no matter what condition your Technics SL1200 or SL1210 is in, it will always be the industry standard for a DJ Turntable and will hold or appreciate in value from now on.

Awesome work Asio, let us know if your coming up to Brisbane. I would love to get my 1200 & 1210 reworked with new RCA's, no ground wire and a service on the pitch.

Just PM'ed you guys who are in Melbourne, still finding a good date to come upto QLD, possibly around the weekend of the 7th of October (for the last Breaks and Enter gig ever at Barsoma)

Anyways check this bent tonearm out that im servicing on a deck, i have no idea how this could have happened (maybe in transit) but it was doing all sorts of weird stuff when playing a record and you dont notice it until you look directly side on to it.

something to cringe over :-)

Man that look's like it would have taken some force, especially as it looks like you would have had to be pulling the tonearm up from the needle end and have some kind of chock under the counterweight.

I have seen a mirror image of that (well upside down anyway) a bunch of times but thats from wankers dropping their cd wallets on the decks (that shit makes me want to punch babies).

Service Request
Hey Mate,

Can you PM me your details,

I'm in the eastern Melbourne area, would love to get the 1200s serviced. Can possibly drop them off to you at some point, they are already in fairly good nick and have had the quartz lock removal but might get you to check that out.

The $60 package sounds good for the led, pitch calibration, ground wire, 2.5 rca's and click removal.

I am tempted to get the white powder coating as well, it looks awesome. Do you also do those UFO ring lights on the inside so the LED lights up around the rim of the platter ?

Cheers

Disabling the pitch click (disabling the quart lock circuit) is a dumb idea if you are backing up vinyl and it's the only guarantee you have of perfect consistent speed. When analogue control of the motor via the pitch fader is active, speed will waver across the whole range.

This isn't a problem on later model eg the SL1200M5G etc as speed is referenced to a quartz oscillator through the whole speed range.

This isn't a problem if vinyl transcription is not important to you.

I've owned mine for...ummm...9-10 year now I think...only serviced them once as one of the RCA connections had clapped out...calibration was still fine, so just got them looked over and better quality RCA's added...don't fix what ain't broke, eh?

Thats it mate, dont fix if it anit broke.

Just a quick one, with the better quality RCA you got on your deck, is it "bigger" then the standard SL1200 cable? if so does your tonearm go any lower than about 2.5mm on the height?

i have been doing alot of decks where the cable has been "upgraded" and the tonearm will not go any lower than 2mm on the height adjustment due to the cable being to big for the gland on the base therefore making needle setup incorrect
