Old thread closed, new thread begins.

Saw Take Shelter recently with the highly underrated Michael Shannon. Very understated but moving with just the right amount of WTF is it?/is it not. I could just keep watching Shannon for ages :swoon:

Yeah I really liked it. Until the end. Not so sure about the ending I have to say. Jessica Chastain and Shea Wiggum (Tigerland, Boardwalk Empire) are both awesome as well. Michael Shannon is a gun though. He totally steals Revolutionary Road from DiCaprio and Winslet.

^ See, i'm not really convinced about him... i've read plenty of great things about him but as yet i haven't really been hugely taken aback by what i've seen (mainly a few support roles, and as the protagonist in the underwhelming Herzog/Lynch collab, 'My Son, My Son, What have ye done'). Until i see a few of his other performances, he is in the same boat as Casey Affleck in regards to being highly OVER-rated by critics and film geeks...

I'm basing my opinion on the only things I can remember him in, or where he's had a significant enough role to show anything - namely Take Shelter, Boardwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road, and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. In all these films/shows I think he's excellent.

No early actors are given multi roles where they can expand on range, they just what they do and do it well. Shannon is doing just that and I love it. In retrospect, very few of the greats, and I struggle in my Christmas cheer/drunken state to name a few (perhaps some who shine through a mix of alt and mainstream aka Gary Oldman), express what they are truly capable of.

Eggnog.

Watched the original 3 star wars films on blu ray. Still as epic as ever. Although a new hope felt a bit dated... empire strikes back is still one of the a time great films.

Samsara. It actually eclipses Moonrise Kingdom as my movie of the year now.

Holy shit, manly tears from the halfway point onwards. The start scene with mummified bodies and the scandinavian lullaby playing gave me chills as well.

drive. a bit late to the party with this one given its hype but i thought it was absolute balls. one of the worst films i have seen in recent memory, the longer it went on the more little things i found to annoy me.

lame ass try-hard vintage 80's movie that's super arthouse cos there's like, no dialogue. and the director's filled the second half with way over the top violence because he's like, tarantino or something.

i reckon i'm a bit of a quitter but i surprised myself that i had the perseverance to sit through this, so that's something i guess..

The man with the iron fists = steaming pile of shit

It was so bad. Seriously what was Tarentino thinking... did he not see RZA wreck the last season of Californication?

My god RZA's acting is cringeworthy. So is his narration . The soundtrack was also not right, I want to hear Ol Dirty Bastard as much as the next guy, but hiphop just didnt seem to fit the fight scenes, Im sure it could if the track selection was right... unfortunately they miss the mark here by a long long way.

just watched Hit & Run - didn't have high hopes but figured I'd give it a whirl because Dax and Veronica Mars are my dream team. I was pleasantly surprised - it was funny and cute and the chase scenes I thought were superb.

Sinister

Some creepyness to it but not as much as I'd hoped for. A bit 'by the numbers' and Ethan was a minute bit annoying, but that could be because I've never taken to him as an actor. I really enjoyed the humorous exchanges between Ethan and Ziggy.

The most WTF came out of nowhere with that

OK gotta set the record straight on this as far as I am aware:

Producer/Writer Alex Garland started the script to the new Dredd movie in 2006, and announced in 2008, and started filming in Johannesburg in November 2010, and filming completed in 13 weeks, where as initial filming for The Raid began in March 2011, and still in production of May that year.

6 Bullets - JCVD's new film. Another entry in the 'Euro-Abduction' genre, but I thought it was actually pretty good, after seeing this and Expendables 2, the man definitely still has it! Good support from Stargate Atlantis' Joe Flanigan.

The book would've been better...

Saw Life of Pi last night, loved it.

Read the book years ago and could only vaguely remember it which is always a good thing with adaptations.

It's a beautiful movie, keeps things moving along nicely, I was thoroughly entertained. First movie since avatar to use 3D really well IMO.

Only thing I couldn't figure out is why Gerard Depardiue (sp?) is in it!

I saw Beasts Of The Southern Wild yesterday, I've been meaning to all year, well, all of last year. It was awesome I loved the shit out of it. Not a perfect movie, but beautifully executed. The young girl is spot on, and her dad does a great job as well. It's a unique story, but it reminds me a little of Where The Wild Things Are. Not too long, well paced, good voice overs even though I don't usually like much voice over. I give it 8/10 and I'm looking forward to watching it again soon.

Moonrise Kingdom

A delight from beginning to end. Art direction and cinematography absolutely top notch. One of my Wes Anderson faves for sure - up there with Rushmore. Really glad he kept most of the focus on the kids and not the miserable adult characters. I was never bored and never sure how it was going to end.

yeh i really liked inglorious bastards if i recall correctly.

watched Ruby Sparks yesterday.

meh. it was ok. bit too sappy 'arty' love story. the 'writing a character in a film and that person comes to life' thing has been done. The female lead was pretty cute, so she made it bearable.

Watched

Liberal Arts thought it was a good watch; happy it didnt turn into the typical guy meets girl bla bla story. 6-7/10

3 2 1 Frankie go Boom The guys from Sons of Anarchy has been eveyrwhere in my viewing recently; I liked this movie, maybe because I love Lizzy Caplin, Whitney Cummings looks dreadful in this film though. 6/10

Green Street Holigans Hadnt seen this in a long time, but the re-watch was worth the wait, very violent which I dont usually like, but I didint mind so much this time. 5/10

This is 40 Only watched this because of Leslie Mann, she's the best. But the movie wasnt too bad, I thought it was going to be super trashtastic. 4-5/10

Perfect Pitch or Pitch Perfect, whatever its called Trash to the maximum of levels, I only watched this because Adam from Workaholics was on the bill, and Rebel Wilson, but do not watch. This is dreadful. No rating/10

Cant think of what else Ive watched recently..

Pete Gordon - Deep and Low

Slower tempo but still with balls, deephouse, slow-mo, futurehouse, nudeep, indie, nudisco, hints of progressive, whatever the fuck you want to call it, just good shit! Get on it
