Be different, but not too different.

Get good at doing warm up sets (buy music other than peak-time bangers).

Go out a lot. Dance. Especially at the venues where you want to play.

Be really humble, but not a suck-up.

There's a couple of ways. It depends what kind of sound you have and what sort of scene you're going for...

-Have some decent mixes online 30 mins-1 hour. Some warmups, and peaktimes, and with decent mixes and unique tunes. Promoters don't want to hear everything they've heard before in the last year (don't put in Avicis latest, that doesn't show uniqueness). On the otherhand, throwing in an old classic from 10 years ago shows depth and musical knowledge. And seriously, stay away from a heap of mashup bootlegs that every other DJ is doing.

-Maybe actually put a mix on CD and give it to a promoter at the end of the night? Better than just randomly sending a soundcloud link. Actually chat to and get to know the promoters of different nights. Ask them about the night, the music, why they picked the DJs they did...

-Put on you own night at a slightly struggling club. Get your one of your mates to play as well as one or two of the better DJs in your local scene. Put yourself on as the warm-up or closing DJ. Make some flyers, hand them out at other gigs - don't just rely on facebook.

-Become friends with other DJs in the scene. Go to the afterparties, share a herbal cigarette with them, give them a demo, get an older DJ to take you under their wing and be your mentor. Be friends on facebook and take part in debates about how good/shit the scene is and don't offend anyone and be all about the music.

-Go to different styles of clubs and events and make friends with different people. Despite what many people say, there's very little difference in how the more commercial club scene or the bush-doof scene work - DJ politics is exactly the same. People get gigs by being nice guys and having friends who put on parties. However, different scenes do have different ways of running events and different mixing styles etc. Being versatile and being able to play for a bunch of drunk girls, serious techno nerds or tripping ravers all have their advantages to grow as a DJ.

-Respect the older DJs of the scene, but also take some of their jadeiness with a grain of salt.

-Learn how to mix on CDJs. Doesn't matter if you usually use traktor at home, if you can't mix without a laptop you're not ready yet. Many clubs just have the basic setup and only room for their gear - a club promoter is not going to let you set up your computer for an hour long warm-up set.

-Have fun. Seriously - DJs who rock a set playing for 5 people in an empty club get noticed as opposed to the guy complaining about playing an opening set.

Good post Digitalgrub, fuck all that can be added to that!
Pete Gordon - Deep and Low

Slower tempo but still with balls, deephouse, slow-mo, futurehouse, nudeep, indie, nudisco, hints of progressive, whatever the fuck you want to call it, just good shit! Get on it

Agreed.

As much as I thought that the original poster (slash potential troll) was about to get a proper flaming, someone comes out with a detailed and sensible response.

Fair play.

I'm in shock. That was very sound, thoughtful advice.
I was just going to say to be the guy who;
1. goes around shouting out your own dj monicker whenever an 18 year old chick on the dancefloor tries to trainspot the name of any artist or track that's currently being played at every gig you go to
2. gives promoters free drugs, ideally rack up on one of your mix cds and leave it on their coffee table.
3. contacts Brag Magazine to say you're going to take a shot at the world record marathon dj set, 350 hours baby! Wooooooooo!

Now I feel like an idiot.

Just do what he said.

I wish this was true/enforced. Wouldn't have to hear so many DJ's who drag their S4's to every gig and sync the latest beatport top hits.

Lol, thanks guys. And a club that has only 1200s, that's pretty awesome (although increasingly rare) - I can't spin vinyl, so that would cut me out!

One thing for if/when you do come to gigging…get to know your tracks, like really know, intimately know…if you don’t have a PA to give them a crank on, listen in your (good) headphones, really fucking loud, with the lights off and really think about how intense the track is…110% we’ve all been caught out playing things which has a lot more amplitude than we’d expected it to have, thus making it totally inappropriate to the timeslot you’re playing.

Sure, it’s only a 118BPM “deephouse” track, but sometimes there’s a lot more ‘oomph’ to it than you expected.

make sure you are wearing headphones in press shot, and, if possible, stand in front of a graffiti covered wall.

Looking for gigs to play tech house
Hi I've just started getting gigs and am really keen to play Ibiza types of tracks including; tech, minimal and house. Would be awesome if I could find more places that play this sort of music.

You know whats awesome, when someone sends you a mix and then sends you a weekly message asking if you listened to it yet....
