Hi guys. I'm one of the dickheads that makes money out of placing digital ads. Dropping cookies and tracking pixels for a buck.

As of late, I've been making dollars for getting people to install mobile apps on their phones. They call it user acquisition, I call it easy money.

I do other things too though... but generally it boils down to one thing: Growing email databases to make someone else more money.

Eight years ago I sold a list for 20k. The list: people who go on diets.

No coder or game dev here but I do a tonne of 3D CAD and CNC programming along with complete product design to manufacture services.

Years ago I bodged up this 1998 style website to flog off my products worldwide with minor success however I since sold the rights to all of my products to a firm that I still do contract work for, hence the X-ed out pricing and links off to a different website.

Not bad.

So did you create custom posts & fields to get that happening? Looks like the site is using a premium theme, was this post-launch work so they could better manage artworks related to artists and/or communities? Or were you involved in the theme purchase and customisation from the start?

Yeah custom posts, fields, taxonomies and workflow/UX stuff on the admin.

Their last site was made with Drupal.

It started as a consulting project but existing cloud based art gallery inventory+integrated website solutions weren't flexible enough or too expensive so opted to charge more than my consulting fee for a custom solution. It was a good opportunity to learn and not be broke.

The theme was free, I just modified it to fit the spec.

Ah nice one, seems pretty solid for a first go.

You are probably already aware of this, but it is an extremely handy tool: http://generatewp.com/

I didn't dig too deep so wasn't aware it was a free theme. But checking out and hacking other themes is a pretty good way to start out and get a handle on how things work TBH.

I've been making a pixel game for the past few months for a broadcast client, it's live now but got some problems. Here's most of the character cast on one sheet, they're all animated, zzzzzz.

Game should be mostly bug free now but who knows. Taken a lot of concessions and hackery to get it to work cross browser (its HTML5 not Flash). Generally it seems to run best in Chrome and FF.

So after 7 months of work, some long fucking days and topping it off with a shit load of boring data entry over virtually an entire weekend, my team put together this:

www.myagedcare.gov.au

Went live on Monday morning.

Biggest bit is now the ability to search for aged care homes, identify how much they cost and compare them. Geotagged as well.

Was ready 5 days early, $110,000 under budget and, if you can fucking believe it - 4 issues remain for resolution, 3 of which will be fixed in a patch release tonight, 1 next week.

I'm pretty fucking proud.

Hmm, thought I'd mentioned this one in here, but I must have only posted in the DayZ thread.

Background: Adsense was doing SFA to cover my hosting costs on dayzoverlay.com last year, so I canned the hateful ads and started thinking about other methods. I came up with a page of DayZ survival gear, aimed at cosplayers, with affiliate links to purchase everything on Amazon. It launched in January, and has done marginally better than the ads (but still SFA).

www.dayzoverlay.com/survivalgear

Fast forward to last week, and I saw a post in /r/entrepreneur about a $10 experiment. Someone had set up an Amazon affiliate account, a free Weebly website, and spent $10 on a reddit ad. Hook it all up, c wot happens. It sounded like a bit of fun, and with a page of affiliate links already set up I had a crack at it. Here's my report:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur...periments_yet/

tl;dr Invested $10, returned $20 and reddit gold.

If you're interested in how reddit ads and Amazon affiliate links work (or just how to make a few bucks for virtually no effort... maybe) the submissions I've linked at the start of my post are a good read. Really small scale stuff, but lots of data being shared.

Not everyone in /r/entrepreneur approves however:

Hey Gruso, this grabbed my attention.

I'd say do some more runs prior to Christmas & other 'buying' holidays like Halloween, valentine's etc and see even more commissions from random items.

Maybe also add some retargeting codes in your landing page maybe (inc custom FB audiences)??

Glad to see you've made something out of it, are you going to try to scale it?

Will run something of my own off Reddit traffic and see. Got some ideas already for big ticket items.

Nice one dude.

Definitely a few ideas on the cooker. Page redesign first and foremost. Wider range of affiliate links including outside Amazon. A bit of research on convention timetables (ie. when are cosplayers putting their outfits together) and experiments in different subreddits (gaming, cosplay, yada yada).

Your idea of doing a push around other buying times is very good too. One thing I learned from the reddit discussion is that you rarely sell the items you link to - but get that 24hr affiliate cookie on someone's machine and you never know what they'll buy. Soon after that post, someone bought a $250 Gears of War collectible piece of plastic rubbish - nothing to do with my links, but my best earner.

Also, the commissions improve if you beat certain thresholds, so 'picking your battles' is a good idea with Amazon if you're using paid traffic.

I will PM you with an update once I run a campaign

http://e-builders.com.au/

So I haven't done any web based stuff since high school, even then I don't think I even successfully mastered frames (remember those?). Anyway, trying to reinvent myself as a web person and made this site. Only really put work into the front page, ignore the rest. Also pretend that the Solar Panel quote form says Builders or whatever.

Hadn't used Wordpress before, found some custom theme, spent ages on it trying to get it to do what I want. Ended up deleting most of the theme and making the header/body/etc into what I want. But because I've designed it using my big screen, I'm not sure if it's going to be functional/aligned on other screens. Oh also never used Photoshop before, so pretty proud of the menu sprites and the background image about the footer (which is about 8 different pictures mashed together).

Few tiny things I still need to do like align text on some pictures, but overall I'm looking for brutal feedback. As I said, brand new to me, almost wore out Google in the process, just looking for feedback as to what's wrong/good before I build on it.

Brutal feedback?! Okay.

First off, nice job for your first attempt. Now that I’ve got the niceties out of the way let's get in to the real meat & potatoes.

On performance: the site is using 15 external javascripts, 13 external stylesheets and 7 background images. That’s not good at all. Concatenate where you can or lose the dodgy plugins that do pointless social stuff (for example).

The site should be using expires headers, and you should enable gzip compression. Don’t place css in the footer/end of page. Don’t put Js
in the header, place that in the footer as that blocks rendering.

Minify your production css and js.

Don’t scale images using html. Ever.

Look here for a more detailed analysis:

http://developers.google.com/speed/p...uilders.com.au

On design: the images you’ve used for the nav text don’t look good at all. Fix the jaggies. I don’t understand the house frame image in the header, fix the scaling and positioning. If you’re not sure what I mean try resizing your browser a bit to see how it responds to different sizes.

You’ve got a lot of text embedded in images that can easily be rendered with html & css. This is all content that isn’t searchable/indexable, and screen readers will hate you as the images aren’t accessible/do not have alt text for those with disabilities.

Your footer headers are doing it right. Readable, selectable text with the two colour styling. Any reason why your nav can’t get this treatment too?

I’m just killing time in KLIA but that should be enough for now.

Awesome, thanks heaps Mick.

Original theme looked like the spoiler pic, more or less happy enough with what it looks like (on my screen using my comptuer), but I know how much I've mashed things together but wasn't sure how it would actually perform in the wild.

Spoiler:

I decided what I'd prefer it to look like and Googled how to do each step, so it got messy. Thanks heaps for the input and showing me that Google tool. Don't entirely understand everything you said, going to have to smash Google some more. Excited to learn even more

Working my way through it. Learned about/implemented caching, minified code, compression, and a couple of other things. About to tackle the render-blocking stuff today. I tried to implement async to the Java stuff but no joy, tried a plugin that claimed it moved JS under <?php wp_footer(); ?> but no joy. Took a backup of the site, going to give the JS stuff a go myself, and go at it like a toddler to a birthday cake.

After that I'll redo the images/text, which seems very straight forward. Thanks again for the input, put me on the path to find a few cool tools.

Awesome stuff, I find the best way to learn about stuff is to just throw yourself in the deep end and do it yourself (how I learned most stuff really, haha!).

Read this for async: http://css-tricks.com/thinking-async/
That site is a gem for getting the low-down on various tools and methods.

It's better to NOT use a plugin for handling your JS (with the exception of WP Super Cache — that plugin can handle a lot of other stuff too like caching (obviously), minifying etc, but it can be finicky and it's easy to screw up your rendering if you don't know how to use it).

Look in to deregistering plugin scripts, concantenating them in to one file then using wp_enqueue_script (the only way you should be including scripts and css (wp_enqueue_style)). This should be all done in functions.php or your own plugin if you prefer to do it that way (there's a few schools of thought on which is the right way).

Read this for more understanding: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_...enqueue_script

Also this: http://justintadlock.com/archives/20...pts-and-styles

Awesome, thanks man. I stumbled across the Super Cache plugin and it's been incredibly helpful, especially with the minify stuff. Also have already done a bit of readong on the enqueue_style, which I'm going to have to implement for one plugin that's not happy about using async. Got the score from 60 to 81 with the advice you gave me. Spending today going through the images, seeing what I can redo as text, etc.

Wicked! That's a good result.
One thing about Google Insights is you probably won't hit 100% (try some of Google's own sites to see what I mean) but it does give you an awesome idea of what you can do to fix things.

Another tool to use which is more comprehensive is Y-Slow: https://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/

Using the two tools together should help you immensely.

Also on your Inspect Tool (Firebug, Chrome Inspect, IE F12…) check out the console. That will show you major errors like missing scripts, images, jquery errors etc…

Oh that's a hot tip, so the messages in Console of the Chrome inspect tool thing should be resolved? I was also using http://seositecheckup.com/, is the stuff it mentions regarding H1, code:text ratio, etc. worth following?

Yeah you should definitely resolve the console issues if you can.
In the case of missing scripts on some clients it can give the impression that your site is still loading/unresponsive.
The advice on seo site check-up is all quite good as well. You should have a heading hierarchy, with H1, H2, H3 etc denoting importance of content on the page. But that's getting fairly granular. Same with the css issues. Resolve them if they are critical to the end user experience, but really your priorities should be a site that loads fast and displays well on both mobile and desktop.

So what are some things to keep in mind when ensuring that the site loads correctly on different sized windows? I found that size: contain is working well for pictures, and messing around with setting fonts to VW rather than % so it scales (but struggling here). Am I on the right track? What other key things should I keep in mind so my site looks pretty across all resolutions?

I guess the biggest thing that I'm having trouble with is the menu pictures/sprite, as soon as the window is sized below the original size of the main column it starts putting things onto another line. Whereas the body's images are all scaled with the width of the column.

Hi Gruso!

So, an update! Things have been going pretty well. I've negotiated 4 day weeks at work. The 5th day I will be working on my own business and side projects.

Which brings me to the pitch.

If you have a mobile app (published on either app store) and want to acquire some users give me a shout. My time won't cost you anything. The deal is I'll use you as a case study. I have some but want moar.

Also hit me up if you just want free consulting about mobile app user acquisition and don't know where to start.

Breakpoints bro. Also, be careful using viewport units if you want to support shit browsers:

https://payitforwardbundle.com/

As far as I can tell, it's like Humble Bundle (pay what you want) but it's for designers. Contains stock photos, templates, and 1 year subscriptions to a few design programs. I know nothing else about this bundle so can't say if it's trustworthy, reliable etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Looks interesting, can you tell me more about this?

The Pay It Forward Bundle is a collaboration among 16 top design brands, where you can choose your own price that you want to pay to purchase the bundle, and then you’ll get access to more than $4,500 worth of design goods and services from each of the partners. Your entire contribution (minus credit card processing fees) goes directly to fund medical procedures for people around the globe who can’t afford them via non-profit Watsi.

How long do I have to redeem the goods I purchased?

You can purchase the Pay It Forward Bundle anytime between December 2nd, 2014 - 11:59pm PST December 31st, 2014, and you’ll have until 11:59pm PST January 31st, 2015 to redeem each of the partner offers. Unfortunately we won’t be able to offer refunds or extend the redemption period, so make sure to redeem each of the partner offers before January 31st, 2015.

How do I redeem promotional bundle items I purchased?

A redemption email will be sent to your email address immediately after purchasing the bundle, and it will contain a link to a special redemption page where you can claim each of the partner offers. The redemption email will also serve as your receipt.

What if I lost my redemption email?

If you lose your redemption email anytime before the redemption period ends (January 31st, 2015), you can always click on the “Already Purchased?” link above, then re-enter the email address you used to purchase the bundle and we’ll send you another copy of your receipt, with the special link to claim each of the partner offers.

How can I use the promotional bundle items once I redeem them?

Once you purchase the bundle, you’ll unlock each of the partner offers on this page. To redeem each of the offers, click on the “Claim Offer” link next to each offer and you’ll be taken to a dedicated page on the partner’s site to redeem their offer. Each of the bundle offers is subject to the terms and conditions of the partner, so if you run into any issues redeeming any of the partner offers please contact the partner directly. Also, please read the Pay It Forward Bundle Terms and Conditions if you have any additional questions.

Can I get a tax write-off for my purchase?

While you’re not able to claim a tax write-off for purchasing the Pay It Forward Bundle (our legal department says something about it being a purchase of goods and services rather than a direct charitable donation), you can still feel great about knowing that the proceeds from your purchase will go directly to support Watsi and all the good they bring to the world...and you get a great deal too.

What if I have a question about a product or have trouble redeeming an offer within the bundle?

If you run into any issues redeeming any of the partner offers, please contact the partner directly and they’ll be able to help you get set up. Unfortunately the Pay It Forward Bundle team won’t be able to help with any product-specific or redemption questions since the partners know their products best!
