Only moved to Brisvegas this year, did have some good times at the Tube, Roxy always fun, and if I can throw in a coast club - Berlin Bar was really cool when it first opened, no signage, no publicity, just word of mouth. But we all know what happens to any GC club eventually… (yes I know it's still open, not same vibe tho)

Knights in Elizabeth Street 'round 1980. Then changed it's name to Hollywoods. And The Silver Dollar in Brunswick Street - now a strip club, I think.

And that derelict building sort of opposite Monestery in Ann Street had about 100 different names, but I remember it as Zits - which is the only place my punk band ever played.

And The Beat's been there through it all!

...and unfortunately, before my time, there was an illegal club set up in one of the office buildings in the city. My father told me about it (he used to be a fire officer) - it was closed down in 1992 due to breaches of fire safety regulations. Apparantly (he was on the team that busted the place a couple of times) it was absolutely rockin! Jason K, you may recall what/where it was...

Shit all these posts bring back memories. I still have huge poster of the first Adrenalin parties. Not to mention stashed away someplace safe a pile of old flyers from all the parties 90 - 95.
You should see what the party prices were then lol

Well for an all time fav. The Site when it was packed the steam that would pour out of the place when you walked in the entrance. I remember first walking in there and seeing people dancing on the little areas above the row of rounded couches.

Oh those were the days.

Memories one thing that can never be stolen.

I can also recall the exodouse from there to the Beat for Angus's set. You would strugel for a place on the dance floor.

lesser known facts no. 427 in 1984 The Beat was actually called the Cockatoo Club...

The DJ who played all night at 100% at the site was none other than current breaks DJ Jon G resident at Sundex.

If you liked Super deluxe it had its precursors in Mass (Polecats fave) but the real originators of this scene came much earlier with The New Exchange, The Tube (the original indie one in the city), Morticia's, The Kaleidoscope Klub, Hades, Voltaire (also at the Majestic before Mass), The Mars Bar and the cross over club with the award for coolest name Funkensteins also feat' DJ Jon G! (indie meets S-Xpress & hiphouse) amongst others.

one day we'll have to do an ancestory of Brisbane dance clubs...one of my faves was the original Euphoria back in 1988 with DJ's Peter Mogg & Kurt playing the first Acid House sets in Brizneyland. This was also the year of Expo 88 (ergh!) the upside of which was the Expratic (Sydney Rat Party team) dance party held at the Expo Funpark complete with rollercoasters (the double drop took on a whole new meaning ) and rides & featuring Boxcar & I think Severed Heads for memory with half of Southbank yours for the taking.

Tim-e I think you are referring to "Wall Street" which was in the 8th floor of an office building in the city - man u must have been on some wikkid stuff for that night as usually the music was pretty damn commercial (not always thou ... Mark James was amongst the residents that played there back when he was Brisbane based).

Jesus4c: aside from Zits that club was also home to The Love Inn now judging from your Knights Till Dawn comment you must also remember what surely must be one of the coolest club names in the known universe "Amyls Nightspace" which was run by 4ZZZ back in the days when 4ZZZ brought all the major acts to Brisbane. (now that you have admitted it ...you have to tell us what your punk band was called as I've put on a few in my time hehe..we want the gory details)

My fave club of all time would have to be Empire Byzantium a mash up of dance music from Africa, The Middle East & Europe that featured bellydancers & market stalls in a club fully decked out with mediaeval icons, gothic candelabra & incense buring away on the tables ..and yes it was held in Brisbane on a Tuesday Night no less & was always packed.

Yes yes, Technomad aka Mantra aka Tube etc etc was a fantastic club.

Though I must say my fave place to groove was definitely Ja-Ja's

That is of course true untill last night.... Liquid Bass rocked my world. Thanks Shaddrach, MagOO & crew.

This is aimed at Jesus, JasonFK - do you remember "Images - Step Into Another World"? It was inside the SGIO building umpteen floors up? Circa 1985?

Cool clubs:

Site
Beat (Angus, Edwin and Kesson in effect)
Groove Kitchen (Angus and Dufty rocking the show)
Go Go Club in Elizabeth Street
That illegal thing everyone broke away to go to after Go Go?
Tube (earlier days at least)
Euphoria/Sibyl's (When used for a decent party)
Grand Orbit
Tunnel
Smokin' (for the very brief period it was around)
Viva
Hogies (Don't laugh!)
Mantra of course

I actually seem to remember The Beat closing down for a while in the early 80's and then re-opening as 'The New Beat', and The Cockatoo Club was upstairs. I remember thinking that the Beat was a good name - why change it to The New Beat? Didn't last long, though, and the 'New' bit was gone after a short while.

That place was also Pinocchio's and a lesbian club called Lew Mours or something like that - 'cept the sign made it look like it was called 'Lemons'.

Don't think you booked MY band, Jason. We played once, and that was the gig at Zits on a Sunday night. 7 people were there, I think, and 6 of 'em were my flatmates! Had an extensive grafitti campaign though - we were called 'Civil Unrest', and another name was 'The Gun Club' which we dropped as soon as we realised an OS band was emmerging with the same name.

he he - Amyl's Nightspace. Yes - used to LOVE that name!!

And Cosmo - Images was on the top floor and had the revolving dancefloor. Have a boogie for a while, walk off the floor and all the girl's handbags were on the other side of the room.

General Jackson's under The Crest was my first ever visit to a Brisbane 'disco'.

Yeah, the UKDT nights ROCKED!!! One of the best sets I saw there was Nik Fish when he played a set that became "Equinox". Still have that tape, one of my favourites!!

Remember this night & Out - I'm sure at one stage it was called M25?? As for that Equinox tape. Green/Purple/Orange/white sorta squiggly tape?? I had and the tape deck ate it for breaky. I'd love a copy of that!

I really did like that place as a venue, had some great nights there. Stormboy for one was a fanatstic night!

Yes yes, Technomad aka Mantra aka Tube etc etc was a fantastic club.

As was always the case when we were open, Mantra was not associated with Techno_ad, Matwix, or tha Toob.

As for fav Bris clubs that was

Mantra (second home)
Empire around 96ish, packed out 3 or 4 nights a week, don't know who was playing
Tunnel for Angus roadtrips
Beat around the same time
The Tube (anyone recall the closing night with SeanQuinn??, I don't :tripping: )lock tha doors and keep em in there lol
:techno:minimal:haus:psy:

:coming soon to a london drivethru near you:
