man, cowboy bebop - how did i miss this for a whole decade. awesome. proper old school, with a story and real character development and no stupid kawaii stuff. f-f-frrrresh.
Check out the Bebop movie if you haven't seen it, and Samurai Champloo which is by the same director or studio I believe.
Gantz ending was shit because the manga is ongoing but they decided to end the anime with 1 season. I thought they were coming up with season 2 but haven't seen any signs of it.
I can't bring myself to even click on the Hidden stuff, man. I'm sorry. I think he makes the musical equivalent of the feeling you'd have after coming down from a 72 hour ice binge and finding you've skull fucked your grandmother to death.
Ponyo on the cliff by the sea is brilliant, a pure movie like Totoro.
I watched it in Japanese. I hate watching Ghibli movies when they've been ruined / dubbed by Americans. They've even chopped off most of the movie title by truncating it to "ponyo".
The film has received considerable critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reported that the film has a "certified fresh" rating of 92%, based on 97 reviews

The Japanese ‘anime’ animation industry is big business, worth $2 billion a year, but it’s facing some major threats and many companies are turning to anime porn just to survive.
The problems come from illegal downloading, which is hurting advertising sales, competition from Chinese and South Korean animators, and dwindling interest from anime’s traditional audience of Japanese children.
There’s also concern that the anime porn depicts children in sexually explicit scenarios. One game is even called RapeLay and lets players choose their victim’s age.
Video journalist Adrian Brown looks at what the future could hold for the big-eyed heroes and heroines of anime in Japan, this Sunday at 8.30pm on SBS ONE.
Madman release ... probably English dub + Japanese language original with English subtitles.

Sort of like the difference between Advent Children and Advent Children Complete.

Before you watch Rebuild, please watch the original directors cut of the series (don't bother with the last two episodes though, End of Evangelion replaces them both with the canon ending, to understand what is going on in Rebuild, you really need to know what happened (and understand it) in the original)
Eva 2.22 is insane, spoilers ahead so I'll try explain whats going on in Rebuild for those who are watching it and missed out on alot of the "lore" side of things in the Evangelion universe.
Spoiler:
In EoE Evangelion unit one absorbed both the life and knowledge fruit it also had Yui's soul thus according to Evangelion lore, it became basically a "god" able to create worlds recycle souls and all sorts, this is also hinted at by Yui's speech in EoE if you care to watch it again (its the "as long as one human soul survives" speech).
My main theory is that Evangelion Unit 01 came back down to earth after the events of EoE and basically "reset" life, so everyone and everything just sort of reappeared back on earth the way they were before the original series started, obviously this is hinted at in Rebuild by the "after effects" of EoE still existing in this world.
Aliens, yes Aliens are all behind Evangelion, according to Evangelion lore Aliens created the white and black eggs as sort of "life ships" to spread their life across the universe, the Aliens planets were dying so they converted themselves back into "souls" boarded the eggs and flew off into space to find new worlds to colonize, as far as I can tell along with the souls (that become either angel life in a white egg and "normal" life in a black egg) the ships had an operator (fruit of knowledge) and a huge "machine" (Lilith/Adam) that would actually create the life based on the fruits "blueprints", as far as I know Kaworu and Rei are both these "fruits of knowledge" and the S2 engines (that are present in Angels, Lilith and Adam) are the fruits of life. (also note that for some reason the Aliens (Known as FAR) split their souls in half, so the "new life" would not have the power to rival the FAR themselves... or something like that, oh and two moons are not supposed to land on the same planet, but on Earth they did, thats why there is the conflict between Angels and Humans)
Now in the end of 2.22 we see Unit One has again taken in both fruits (Rei and the S2 Engine from Zeruel) and has initiated Third Impact, Ritsuko mentions that "new life has been born and has to destroy the life before it" so what Third Impact actually is "recycling souls" into the new species, this is the goal of the Angels, they want their species to inherit Earth so by initiating Third Impact they basically win the earth for themselves.
After the credits we see Kaworu come down and pwn the fuck out of Unit 01, thus ending Third Impact before it started, he promises "he will make Shinji happy this time" (gay sex initiated ) so obviously Kaworu still remembers the events of the last series and it seems his goal this time is to see Shinji's wishes fulfilled, what does this mean?
Personally I think Rebuild is going to go the route of Shinji and the other Eva Pilots "rebelling" against SEELE and stopping "Human Instrumentality" and then we will see what Gendo's plans are (I have the feeling he is actually a good guy this time around tbh) the way its going at the moment, I'm pretty sure Rebuild is going to end on a good note, probably with the Angels defeated, Kaworu leaving with the white egg into space and life returning back to normal.
This is Anno though, so he will probably take us for quite the ride on the troll train.

Oh yeah I just remembered, saw a wicked film on the plane recently. Summer Wars!
From the director of The Girl Who Lept Through Time (which I also really enjoyed) — Summer Wars really kicks it up a notch. Good story, jaw dropping animation, and a really good pace. Will definitely grab this when it comes to dvd. If you enjoyed Girl Who Lept then you'll probably love this.
I know I'm a bit late with this, but I just started watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time. Awesome show. Great soundtrack as well. I'm up to the 13th episode.
For anyone in Sydney, there's a few anime screenings for the Graphic exhibit at the Opera House. www.sydneyoperahouse.com/graphic

EXCLUSIVE WORLD PREMIERE Akira with live score by Regurgitator
Akira is the benchmark film by which all other anime are judged, spawning countless imitators and defining many of the themes, concerns and style of the genre. Set in 2019 in post-World War Three Neo-Tokyo, this animated classic introduced the western world to adult-oriented Japanese animation and has been lauded worldwide as the movie that “started it all”. Akira started life as Katsuhiro Otomo’s epic 2,000+ page manga (Japanese comic book), before being adapted into an animated film in 1988. The film will be shown in the original Japanese language version with English subtitles and rescored live by Regurgitator. As Australia’s most renowned and successful experimental art-rockers, Regurgitator have achieved triple-platinum status – an astonishing feat for such an uncompromising band – who never shy away from the unusual, the untried, or indeed any genre that attracts their creative sensibility.
