So the anime addiction continues!

Just paid for a Perfect collection of Full Metal Panic on eBay.

I already have Fumoffu and have watched most of it and loved it, so figured I should get this as well.

Note that I still haven't watched Lain, the rest of Gantz, GITS:SAC 1st and 2nd gig, the rest of AMG:Everybody has wings and Please Teacher!
However I've watched Elfen Lied twice through, I need to sort my priorities

Naruto fans, the time is upon us.

No more filler episodes. Available on torrents now is a continuation of the original story arc.

For those that haven't gotten into Naruto as yet, don't pay attention to the early morning us version on TV. Its been dumbed down so much its almost unrecognizable. Not even blood!

If you've not gotten into it yet, but have some time on your hands, then get naruto.

The first 130 odd episodes are superb. Skip the next 90 episodes where the story continues with episodes 221, or otherwise called Naruto Shippuuden.

For those that haven't seen any episodes, this is what you've been missing out on...

Saw Gedo senki (Tales from Earthsea) on Friday night at the Dendy and I was suitably impressed.

I knew nothing of the storyline other than it was based upon the book of the same name. I must say I was quite captivated by the story, the characters were great (particularly Hare, and Cob at the end) and the whole film had that signature Gibli magic.

However, I've been reading about it online and it seems others were not so impressed, I've read some pretty bad reviews on this work... wtf? Has anyone else here seen it, thoughts on this film?

I think Miyazaki did a great job. I was really impressed with the restrained use of digital effects in particular. And I'll most certainly watch this film again

2 thumbs up from me for it

i've read the book - Earthsea Quartet i think its called by Ursula le Guin i think. I dont know how closely aligned it is to the book, but its an awesome anime nonetheless. Loved the scenery - as i do in most Gibli anime's and the story was awesome. It def has me inspired to go watch some more...

I keep thinking i need to watch Elfen Lied again  oh god i love that anime!!

I think the problems are the comparisons with his dad, Hayao, and the fact that it just doesn't stand up to such a comparison.

It's a pretty good movie, but I think Ghibli may in fact be going the way of the dinosaur - other studios like Production I.G and Studio 4C are far more relevant now, innovative, and creative.

Things change.

So....what's everyone watching these days?

Claymore is the standout for me atm, fast paced/decent story, chicks with swords.

Bleach is coming off fillers today

Tales from Earthsea was directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro Miyazaki.

Yeah, I first got onto Naruto when they'd already gone through about 160 episodes. So i was spoiled with being able to watch the first 130 back to back. (Tremendous series by the way).

Watching 1 episode a week is killer. But worth it. Sasori is bad ass!

Didn't think you were interested in anything that wasn't a comic book adaptation

(yes, I realise most, if not all anime are manga adaptations...)

Victims' groups want stabbing Ninja toy banned
* Naruto toy performs stab, slash motion
* Comes with ninja stars and weapons holster
* Based on cartoon series shows on TV
In one hand it holds a knife and its arms are programmed only to punch and stab. An accessory range of weapons - including throwing stars with leg holsters - is also available.

Homicide Survivors Association founder Peter Rolfe said the toys taught children a very dangerous lesson.

"I think there's a link between playing with these toys and violent behaviour later.

The whole article is pretty funny. I think I'll buy one.

Twice?

What was the first one, I missed it/forgot what it was...

Anyway, watched ep01 and 02 or Avatar this morning on the train, pretty good, animation is really up to spec and I found they were really good opening eppys. I can see there's a good story behind this one. My only gripe is that it was in english, however I've got a feeling that this might be a western produced show anyway?

Oh and Oppa is SUCH a catbus rip-off, but who cares...

Oh yeah that's right

Yeah I saw the nick logo at the start but figured it was recorded on Nick.
Is is based on a Manga? I noticed you can download the books.

And would this still be classified as an Anime, even though it's western produced? Felt weird to be watching in English

I've seen the first 3 episodes, a chunk of the first episode flew over my head so it requires at least some iota of concentration.

It's VERY pretty though, as you've already noticed no doubt.

I really enjoyed this. It Miyazaki's son's debut as a director, right? Not a bad one for a kid with shoes that big to fill. Thematically it's the usual Ghibli business, but there's something less cartoony and more oil paintingy about the animation, especially the backgrounds and cityscapes. Going to an already popular fictional world, one hitherto only rendered into print, takes a brave director. There's going to be fans with trodden on toes, it's a given. And they're exactly the kind of overly fastidious in entirely the wrong areas type of wankers who write reviews that shitcan films because so and so's robe was the wrong color or the belt buckles of the imperial guard were WRONG. Approach this movie openminded and you get a feature length fantasy story that, on it's own merits, is really quite cool. Got dragons and wizards and everything. I'm so ripping the english dub of Therru's song. Perfect a capella "where did you get that" material.

Ian you'll be happy to know I've been getting into Avatar.

Pretty fucking good. Halfway through the first season and loving it, there's a nice charm to it and plenty of homage to traditional anime.

I also just purchased Ergo Proxy and Cowboy Beebop, hooray for strong Aussie dollar. Couldn't help myself, the urge to buy anime is always too great.

I dig fansubs.

But I'm with Silva, fightscenes don't match up the same in manga compared to full blown anime.

Don't get me wrong I do enjoy a good manga, but it's usually one or the other.

I agree with you pretty much on fight scenes and some other action sequences. But i'm not that big on fight anime/manga like naruto, bleach etc. And yeah the Lupin the third manga isn't as good as the shows and movies.

I love both, thats why i get fansubs, i was refering to more affording only one.

But yeah a lot of manga (speaking more rom coms and comedies) are far superior to the anime.

My rule is always go for the original medium - novel, comic/manga, anime. First one is nearly always the best.
Thats why i won't read the cowboy beepob and neon genesis mangas becuase i think they came out in anime form first and they were stunning.

What with my recent home internet access been able to d/l a stack of stuff been wanting for ages.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Hellsing, bloody awesome. The series of OVAs is marginally better in terms of animation and is apparently closer to the source material, however the tv series is still worthy and features a pretty good musical score imho. Part 4 of the OVA is due out this month.

Also got Samurai X OVA Trust and Betrayl, which I havn't watched yet.
Macross Plus which I havn't seen since my anime interest started to blossom.
Macross Zero which is a so far good prequel to the older SDF1 Macross.
Guyver 2005 which was fantastic.
Excel Saga which I havn't watched yet.
And RahXephon which I'm just around half way thru. Similar to NGE in ways but different.

Also purchased Tekkon Kinkreet a month or so ago, which was also briliant.

Still got a fair bit more on my list of wants. Samurai 7 being near the top as well as Ninja Scrol series.
Anyone seen either of those for a recommendation / opinion?
Also looking to get Cyber City Oedo 808 which I remember seeing many years ago, and possibly some GitS:SAC but am put off by boxset pricing and also pure bandwidth size / allocation limits.

Anything else people would care to recommend?

Last thing I picked up was the pilot for Robotech: Shadow Chronicles, which was fucking appalling.

Not that Ive been paying any attention, but the last piece of top shelf anime I heard about was Ghost in The Shell 2, which came out, like what, 3 years ago?

Tales from Earthsea, was nowhere near what i expected it to be.

the story was heavily trimmed and i though it jumped around too much.

I found it heavily lacking the normal 'epic' properties of a Gibli film.

i recommended watching the BBC film of the same name if you liked the story for a more satisfying experience.

I watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Neighbour Totoro (pretty much the only Miyazaki I hadn't seen yet) on the weekend, both awesome movies but Totoro was pure Ghibli, just magical. Absolutely loved it.

Only 9 weeks until I am visiting the Ghibli museum ...

Just noticed this thread. I haven't watched anything new in ages. Think the last series I was watching was the final fantasy unlimited series when I had 1 month's free with bigpond dvd's. Although I did watch spirited away again the other night. Love it.
