Merrick and Rosso : unplanned
Did anyone see the first one of this? I thought it was pretty good for the first one.

Basically, they take a few questions from the audience and tell some funny little tale about own experiences mixed in with a few little gags of their own. For the most part it worked well, the only silly thing I guess was the rendition they made for Kerry Ann Kennel ... err Kennerly at the end. I guess only those two could get away looking that silly as they sung that Bette Midler song "Wing beneath my wings".

What did everyone else think?

I think it's on the Comedy Channel or UK TV at the moment.

It's a shame Merrick & Rosso couldn't come up with something original.

baddiel and skinner were responsible for one of the funniest shows of all time; fantasy football league/world cup. i thought the 'unplanned' format sucked tho, and switched off.

merrick and rosso are pretty damn funny too, but i still feel the format sucks. i liked this better than b&s tho - maybe cos the format is so...personal/improvised, therefore i can relate to it more cos they're aussies?

two points:

*the music reminds me so much of the micallef tonight music!

*the audience get krispy kremes. ohhhh man...so jealous

Chillnbass, i agree about B&S, a lot of their material was hit and miss and I would give them credit for going ahead with it. Its strange to see the format been brought over here, only time will tell if it is a success............if you can remember the theme tune from the B&S show: they kept saying "it'll never work, it'll never work" suprisingly in the UK it did work and they are on their 4 series i think?

skinner on his own pops up on comedy channel a bit. he has his moments. never seen the orig fantasty football show.

dunno about m&r. used to live them arvos on JJJ. they're lame on mornings on nova, so hard to see them being funny on TV.

yeh but regardless, merrick and rosso are still hell funny. Just coz the idea has been done before doesnt strip them of their comic ability.

I know it is cool to like merrick and rosso for their jjj days when they were more underground and now slag them cause they are mainstream, fuck, they are so funny though with anything they do.

there was even the song at the end.

if they were going to do the local version of the show then they should have included the random audience member who writes down whats happening on the big piece of cardboard.

"Now Aussie....STILL dodgy"

Frank Skinner admitted in his autobiography that the unplanned show format had the potential to be either brilliant or complete and utter pants.

What was basically a very silly idea got taken up by a TV company purely because of the success of Fantasy Football etc.

He felt that while some of the shows uncovered some brilliant moments and very funny nights, overall it was quite hit and miss and for that reason the show was ultimately doomed to fail.

He loved the spotenaity of the show and loved the fact that it go absolutely anywhere, but you really needed a special moment to relax the audience and let them go with the moment. The show was only as good as the people there and the material you could drag out of them.

M&R may have taken the piss out of a geeky nerd last night and it may have been hilarous viewing, but they aren't going to have such cannon fodder every week.

I really wish them the best of luck, because god alone knows, Australian comedy needs a funny show. Knowing that Merrick and Rosso love winging stuff, maybe they'll be the sort of comedians who can really do it justice. Fingers crossed.

Mate, those guys have the standard Dungeons & Dragons/Windows 95/pocket-protector type gags written on their arms, just waiting for a sitting duck to quack. Its just poor-mans comedy-by-numbers, dont be surprised if they accidently spit up the exact same lines next week. In my opinion, they could have gone to town on that Bristol dickhead for the whole half-hour, but Rosso's Bristol Paints gag was very poor.

Even from back in their JJJ days, I still only regard them as fringe-comics, with a good grip on Aussie vernacular.

To be truthful, I was amazed that they could think on their feet for the whole 23 minutes, but I fear the next episode will be a fucking train wreck, and episode 3 wont even get out of the can.

After all, its Channel Nine's sado-masochistic pleasure in watching their newest personalities hang themselves on national TV. Kerry Packer probably sits there watching and masturbating(finger up the arse, and all), wondering who's career he can rip to shreds next week.

I agree that last night's show was the best. It was getting a little repetitive/dull for a while. Don't get me wrong, I think Merrick and Rosso are legends, but they can do a lot better than previous weeks have shown. They need to include more pranks and skits then just taking questions from the audience. Otherwise the show won't last.

I can honestly say I laughed until tears rolled down my face when they tried to make Orange and Mango flavoured soda stream using milk as the base liquid. Fizzy milk, now that was funny

Mrs Lamb came in to see what I was laughing at, but didn't get the joke. I guess you had to see it as it doesn't sound as funny in print either.

Last nights show was funny and they did make some good cracks, but consistancy is the key.

I will be tuning in next week if I am sitting in front of the tv and I have nothing else to do.

Yeah the orange and mango milk thing was priceless!! It was even better how that bogan in the aqua shirt took a giant slug of the crap just to save face after the hammering he took for the shirt his mum made him! The slop got everywhere. I also thought the prank to Angry Anderson was pretty good too. He's like "Who's this?" "Is that you Steve?" What a horrendous rendition of 'Suddenly' they gave him down the phone line too

I've watched the show three times now and while I do enjoy it, it does seem like the questions have been planted.

However, that said it's a pretty decent way to spend half an hour if you really don't want to have to think.

M&R do a pretty decent job of making me chuckle, even if they don't have me in stitches.

What probably annoys me more - is when merrick laughs riotously at pretty much everything Rosso says . Either the guy finds his mate fucking hilarious, or he thinks cracking up will make the audience think their shtick is funnier
