The new Doom | It's called Doom
The E3 teaser (not the new gameplay):
Spoiler:

Quote:

At QuakeCon today, Id Software showed gameplay of the next installment in the Doom franchise, simply titled Doom, for the very first time after teasing it at E3 this past June.

The game has been a long time coming, with it being first mentioned at QuakeCon way back in 2007 by John Carmack, id co-founder and then-lead developer for the company. Recording of any kind was prohibited at the event, but there was a lot of information to process during the 20-minute-long gameplay demo. Here are a bunch of the highlights:

  • Fast-paced combat against multiple enemies at once - Doom 3 this ain't.
  • Set outside a massive UAC research facility on Mars as it's being invaded by the forces of Hell.
  • Hellknights, cyberdemons, revenants, mancubii, and other classic monsters were spotted throughout the demo.
  • Classic Doom weapons, including the fan-favorite double-barrell shotgun return. Plasma rifle, rocket launcher, and the good old chainsaw were also shown off.
  • Go fast. "Doom is not about about taking cover" said executive producer Marty Stratton.
  • Doom is powered by IdTech 6, and will be for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. They are "committed" to 1080P at 60 frames-per-second.
  • Wonderfully gory close range executions, including special ones for dropping down on enemies from above.
  • Revenants now have jetpacks and can hover about while firing rockets at you.
  • At least one weapon, the combat shotgun, has an alternate fire mode, which allows you to charge up and release multiple shells in rapid succession.
  • Sprinting, double-jumping and mantling are all possible, making for very fluid motion during combat.
  • Enemies can teleport in for old-school style ambushes
  • Dying results in a crazy fatality scene depending on what killed you a la Dead Space. Revenants rip your arms off and punch straight through your combat helment.
  • Old school mechanics. No reloading your clip, hold as many weapons as you want, health and ammo pick-ups etc. NO REGENERATING HEALTH.

Remember Painkiller? That tried to be the next doom. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.

Holy shit, those tweets, they were magical. I actually burst in to laughter when I got to the bit about the beating to death of the player with their very own arms. Made even better with the standing ovation. Everyone in that room knew what a Doom game required. And everyone in that room was satisfied by their bloodlust.

I started a playthrough of the originals on the weekend. Cheat codes were occasionally used.

If anyone's planning the same, get zDoom. Just add IWADs. http://zdoom.org/Download

(If you have bought any of the classics on Steam - Doom, Heretic, Hexen etc - from everything I've read they run in DOSbox and are generally terrible. Find the IWADs and run them in zDoom).

quake runs ok from steam (or did under win7, haven't tried since upgrading to 8.1), but yeah doom did not - ran inside dosbox and just locked up almost instantly even with some tweaking.

Jah, Quake uses a native engine. That's why zDoom rocks - it's a source port of the Doom engine with tons of modern tweaking options.

Doom must be one of the most ported game engines in history, so I can't get my head around why the Steam release uses emulation.

Looks like some old-school, fast-paced, bloody fun. I hope they work harder on a decent story this time. Narrative was always Doom's weakest point.

Doom was never about story. It was about killing hordes of demons in a pioneering era of gaming. Shit has changed a lot since then. Most people now need something more than there's a demon, kill it.

Happy to say I ain't one of em!

The only story of recent times I could say I've been invested in would be TLOU.

Environments and soundtrack are killer. Not a fan of the bullet time weapon select - I would hope there'd be an option to disable that and use hotkeys. Console oriented demo though obviously.

Agreed on the soundtrack. Love that grimy, droney, industrial vibe.

Yeah this really irked me as well. Completely ruins the high speed flow of the gameplay. Even if this option is console orientated, there must be a better way of doing it.

You're right, there's no reason it should be like that even on a console. Rapid weapon wheel selection is one of the reasons I like playing GTA with a controller.

I know it was never about story. I was saying I didn't like that aspect of it.

And narrative has always been important in games - games from around the same era and even before had amazing stories (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy etc.), so yeah.

where are the videos from? the first one looks heaps more detailed and better than the second one, which seems kind of bland. although I guess that could be due to the whole youtube thing.

it seems almost gory for gore's sake though.

far out i think i'm getting old.

stacks of SP gameplay & commentary

Media Player

Was talking games with one of my bosses kids who's 14 & playing MP games at school. I mentioned we used to play Doom - one of the first mp fps games ever if not the first - in the computer room thanks to our awesome teacher who used to let us in there at lunch. He'd never heard of it I then in formed him it was older than he was and he should get off my lawn.

My old boss from when I was working in London in the early noughties was the first person to distribute the shareware of Doom on a BBS in the whole of the UK.

Ok, so I clocked the single player campaign over the last couple of days and here are my thoughts.

In terms of gameplay, very well done. I was playing on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty and found myself constantly being kept on my toes during a lot of the intense battles, particularly as a few of the demons would occasionally try and sneak up behind me or spawn when I wasn't looking. The Hell Knights look more like their Doom 3 counterparts, else the rest of the monsters you face are pretty much taken from Doom 1 and 2 and given an update, along with a couple of newbies such as the Cyber Mancubus. Only couple missing was the Pain Elemental and the Arch Vile, but there is a similar monster called a Summoner which looks a lot like the latter. In a way, it felt like if Doom was started around today, this is pretty much how they would have done it regardless of being a reboot.

The weapon mod system is interesting as well, along with the suit upgrades and rune challenges, which make hunting for them worthwhile. Some weapons, like the Super Shotgun and Heavy Assault Rifle, really come into their own when fully upgraded, particularly the latter with the constantly firing micro missile upgrade. Ended up with spare upgrade points at the end, so would've been nice to push for a third tier of upgrades for some of the weapons once the other two were completed.

Spoiler:
The Doom Marine turns out to have been found in a cursed sarcophagus by a UAC exploration team during an expedition into Hell, which is a departure from the previous ones where the marine has been shipped to the base on Mars. The Cyberdemon battle was well done and the same with the Hell Guards and Spider Mastermind boss battles. It also sets itself up for a future installment at the end, but won't say anything just yet.

Going to give the multiplayer a bit of go later on today and see how much has changed from the beta.
