My first setup

Decks: Numark TT500 x2
Mixer: Vestax VMC-002
Headphones: Sony MDR-Z700 (Possibly ripped version of the MDR-V700, but sound quality was awesome for what they cost me)

Has made tweaking the FS1R and Proteus 2000 fun again. The pots/sliders can also control Pro Tools however the latency while under steam is near-unworkable. Not a worry as it I'd never planned to use it that way.

Have a great week, all.

holly molly, wat the hell is all that for spektrum? looks likes the ultra producers setup, very technical looking!

Hey mate,

Yeah, was (is still?) a little cramped, though now with the MIDI controller in place, it's all quite workable indeed.

And given we've got some random gig in Mandurah lined up for the end of the year, we best get crackin'!

Do you get weekdays free? Or just evenings/weekends?

Gotta put it off for a couple of weeks while I crack open my friggin' "Macs Just Work®" iBook to replace the hard drive which I really should have done a few months back instead of opting for the false sense of security of a clean install on a bung drive.

Must be honest and say collaborations aren't something I've really been a part of much in the past, though I'm all up for it... what do you find works for you?

In fact, how do any of you guys go about to work on tracks with others?

Hahaha... there'd be plenty of other bits'n'pieces one might add to make the "ultra producers setup", I bet. Anyway, there's an ace in every place, having cut out a few other synths/FX a few years back.

To make it simpler, maybe consider it this way...

K5000S synth plug-in
AN1x synth plug-in
FS1R synth plug-in
Proteus 2000 synth plug-in

plus,

MPX500 effects plug-in

plus,

a cheap MIDI keyboard controller.

...all running a small laptop.

I bet even the most humble producer would have at least four soft-synths (plus effects) in their arsenal.

It ain't as technical* as it might seem.

(*It looks a whole lot more dramatic with the controller keyboard appearing as four separate devices in that layout).

If you're not at one of the other two gigs on this Saturday, I'm playing at the Velvet Lounge (Mt Lawley) at 11pm.
And yeh, just finished uni, and for the most part unemployed, so weekends and week days mean little to me
In my limited experience, I'd say there are two ways of collaborating, there's the realtime and the offline (file-share) modes. The latter's more convenient but perhaps less inclined to spontaneous, happy accidents.
(Only just got my iMac's bung hard-drive replaced - just under a year after I got it, free of charge thank christ, the monthly reformats were a pain )

Mount Lawley eh?!! Right in our backyard.

Yep, us (MsJax and myself) weary soldiers will pop along, but not before an afternoon nap. Haven't yet got ourselves to Velvet Lounge (only the Scotto main bar/street).

Looking forward to it.

What are the other 2x gigs BTW?

Cool. I work retail hours (incl. Sundays) meaning typically a weekday and Sat or Sun off. We'll work something out.

Yeah, I've always found that two people crowding around one person's sequencer of choice doesn't yield the most spontaneous of sessions. No drama though.

Can you believe it, the only two Mac users in the entire world with hardware troubles finding themselves on a random internet forum. Who'd have thought?

i didn't build any of it... the CDJ stands i could make, the desk is another matter entirely i can weld stainless resonably well, but that desk is way over my level of skill.

I'm luckly enough to have at my desposal a stainless workshop with welders and fitters.... so when it's not busy, they work on my desk... when we get an order they do that. hell, they're paid to be there whether they're standing around scratching their nuts or working... may as well make them work.

the desk has ~30-40 hours of labour in it.... the CDJ stands 2-3 probably... now most welders would be charged out at $50/hr... that's one expensive table (it cost me $200 for the metal )

I got mine at the uni poster sales that go around all the uni's in sydney... UTS UNSW USyd etc etc.... i've also got a wallace and grommit one with TRANCE

TT, denon hands down... i bought the vestax unit due to the tascam controller unit you see on the right hand deck and it being very, very cheap

Mmm, that table + stand setup is sweet! It sure makes me feel lame with my custom rack setup planned to be made out of mild steel and arc welded
That said, the drum trigger pads I'm machining right now are done to pretty fine tolerances and should end up looking good too (milled perspex chassis), so that'll be my thing to brag about.

I'm not sure if that was aimed at me, but I was originally going to put small lights under the speaker benches so i could play with the lights out easily maybe black lights would be better :offchops:

Top work there, mate!

As I said to you just before, really love the tinkly, delayed, arp-ish melodies, and the groove/feel created through them. Plenty of energy from you up there too. Who ever said "checking your emails" was boring to watch! Too funny that the MS-2000 acts as a MIDI controller only! Good crowd there too.

Will call you over the next fortnight. Again, gotta sort out this hard drive of mine or risk tapping our fingers to the infamous OS X spinning rainbow lollypop cursor thingie...

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Cheers.

Yeah... when did you get the AN1x? Don't recall seeing it in your previous studio pics.

Was good. Didn't stuff up half as much as last time.

I lost people in the 20 minutes of ambience that I threw in during the middle (although two people came up to me and said they loved that bit). But almost made up for it with the 10 mins of banging techno I busted out at the end.

Was still only 50min long - no matter how much new material I write I can still never create a cohesive journey that's long enough, but it's given me something to work on.

I'll upload it to the techno forum shortly.

MESA was a no go. so i sample things 1 at a time into the s2k then play that one bit and record it into the computer for "that" sound

45 minutes is the perfect amount of time for a live set I reckon. short and sweet. if people love it, it'll leave them wanting more. if people hate it, they don't have to wait too long before the next person comes on. and for the artist, it means u don't have to stress about being able to come up with too much new material. intro takes up 3-5 minutes, then u got 40 minutes to mix it up between old and new material. also long enough to create a groove that builds and intensifies as the set progresses...
