Bit of help with Digital Camera stuff?
Not sure as to which forum this should go, perhaps travel, perhaps general, but I'll put in Sydney and let the mods sort it out.

I'm gonna be travelling through Europe, and I got my new cameras etc, and was just wondering what was the best way to store the billions of photo's I am going to take? I got a 128MB and 16MB xD card, and I'm going to buy another 128, or perhaps even a 256MB xD card, but when this space runs out I'm going to need to offload them somewhere so I can print them off later. (I don't want to pay tourist prices for the printing of my pictures ) I'm not going to take laptop for the purpose of this, (I don't even want to go anywhere near a computer, for fear of logging on to ITM during my vacation )

Was thinking something along the lines of the X-Drive II (which doesn't support xD cards )? Any recommendations/advice? And, to make this somewhat Sydney relevant, where in Sydney can I pick one up?

Cheers

You could always get a : http://www.dpreview.com/news/0406/04...agate5gbmd.asp

:p

Buy an ipod, and buy a media drive for them (not sure of price) you can hold 1,000's of pix on there by inserting the compactflash etc directly into it, and you can store your music aswell using it as a normal ipod. Two birds with one stone. Not sure about the drive you mention.

Firstly I recommend sorting through your photos each day and deleting the crap ones.

Then when your stick is full, go to a chemist/photo developers and get them to burn your stick to CD (any place that processes digital pics should be able to do this).

Wipe and repeat...

Its a good method for someone who doesn't want to outlay for a hardware device upfront. However, if you were on a long trip the little fee's for this service might start to add up.

That's what I use. I got the 30GB model from Funksta. I used it on my holidays to listen to MP3s when I was chilling out, and to back up my compact flash card at least once or twice a day. If you would like to borrow it or just have a closer look let me know.

Edit: Wow the prices on that site are INSANE. Consider grabbing one off Ebay instead.

I was going 2 get an X-Drive Pro II, but it doesn't support Memstick PRO, so it's a no go......

I'm taking a laptop to Europe with me....it'll stay in the hotel/hostels or in the boot of the car.....going to dump stuff to that daily......it's old, it's shitty, it's cheap and it's got 20 gig of free HDD space.

you should be able to get them "exposed" to cd at most photo places, probrably the best option as long as you dont loose the cd's.

if you own a ipod, you can get one of the belkin storage adaptors and use that, they are quite handy.

other than that.. a laptop is good

i think the biggest problem your going to have with all those drives is the type of card you got, being . i also use these cards and i have looked (6months ago) into getting one of those portable hard drives, problem was none of them support . i havn't looked recently so maybe they have changed. Same with ipod thou, dont support it.

i'd say your best bet is just rocking down to the local chemist/photoshop. THey can easily put them on CD for you, costs about $10 here in aus. So just wait till all your cards are full, cruise down and get em to offload them all. If your using 16, 128 and another 128 or 256, i reckon that'll keep you going for a few days, unless your very snap happy.

Save the money for your holiday instead of buying a harddrive, unless you really need it and will be able to continue to use it once the holiday is over.

As a "mac guy" I figured you'd be pimping Spymac (which offers 1 GB e-mail account, 350 MB combined storage, personal blog, forum, gallery, auctions and more).

I don't recommend burning them onto CD personally. If it was me, I'd either lose the cds, or scratch them somehow. Also, you arent necessarily going to be near camera stores all the time, its an extra hassle to track them down. Also, not sure what mp your cam is - but if its a high one, you'll go through those cards like nothing else...that could amount to a decent amount of money to keep burning it off.

mm - yeah v.steep pricing!

Erm, if you can't be trusted to not lose CD's or scratch them, you should probably be using a disposable camera and not worrying about portable hard-disks! :p

Also, if you have say half a gig of stick, that's nearly a CD's worth and is nearly three-hundred 5mp pix (if memory serves me right).

Like I said, go through reguarly and delete the crap, and only keep the good ones. Then go and burn.

I'm not talking about sticks. I was talking about purchasing a 30gb storage/viewing device for your photos. Thats one thing to keep track off, and a one off expense. You would only need one compactflash card for your camera (say 256 or 512) and just keep storing it on the one device.

Thats two things to keep track of: your camera, and the storage device.

Yes, my point was....if you don't want to splash out on a storage device (which you are going to lose by the sounds of it :p), just burn your stick/s to CD along the way.

Store your burnt discs in a zip-up padded CD case.

About the same size as a portable storage device and will store about 20Gb (worth of CDs). Yours for $9.99 from your local music store. :p

....that, not this....
