Announcing the DJs every hour was cool at first, but after a while It was just a chance to duck outside and have a smoke. Good on them for trying something new, I liked the concept, but I would only bother with big intros for the main act from now on.
The thing I noticed about the whole night was the complete lack of any set progression. The entire night was basically a glorified jukebox. The DJs woule basically cue a new track, people would (or wouldn't) recognise it, dance to it, and then wait to see what they cued up next. VERY little mixing all night.
I guess that was because of all the vs. battles, the constant introductions and the CDs jumping from time to time.
Also FAR FAR too many breakdowns. But I guess that is hardstyle.
It was just very hard to get into a zone and dance and enjoy the music for more than a few minutes at a time.
For the record, I liked Kutski and others switching up from time to time... heard Skrillex twice, Prodigy's original 'Out of Space', and others... A good DJ throws in surprises to reset or get things going again... I liked it.
All in all, I liked it. Glad I went. Production was perfect for the Hordern, sound was (mostly) good, got into the hard trance at the start (even though Kai and JamX disappointed) and also the hard style at the end. I thought Zatox's final set was the best of the night, but all the hardstyle DJS got the crowd going.
And for once there weren't police dogs anywhere... and you know what? I think people were safer as a result. Didn't notice any real fights, crowd was generally friendly, felt safe all night.
The whole crowd was awesome, minimal trouble, as I said 2 fights broke out at the front, but were quickly handled. Was good to see no dogs, that way nobody out of paranoia dunks all their gear.
