I’ve been a big fan of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series since its inception on the original Playstation, so was particularly keen to check out the ‘Tony Hawk Underground 2 remix’ launch title on Sony’s handheld PSP console. Anyone who has played any of the games in the Tony Hawk series will know what to expect – intuitive controls, realistic sense of movement and great sound.

‘Tony Hawk Underground 2 remix’ certainly doesn’t disappoint. What you get is more of the same – plenty of huge levels, a few game types, multiplayer and a massive 50-song soundtrack. In fact apart from the smaller screen and slightly different control setup, it feels virtually like THUG 2 straight off the PS2 or Xbox – not a bad thing by any means!

Game-wise, there are 4 new levels not seen before (Santa Cruz, Kyoto, Atlanta and Las Vegas), new guest skaters and 2 different game modes – Story mode and Classic mode. Story mode is the ‘World Destruction Tour’ which has you competing as a part of a team of skaters, touring the world and scoring points to move through each level. Control-wise, you pretty much use the same buttons and combos as the full console version of THUG 2 minus the second set of shoulder buttons. One thing I did get slightly annoyed with was accidentally hitting the left shoulder button during big moves, which reverts you to ‘walking mode’ – no big deal though, because you can turn this off in the control options.

One aspect of the game that I’m still yet to try out is the wireless multiplayer mode – THUG 2 remix gives you 10 different multiplayer games to play (“Scavenger Hunt”, “SLAP!”, “Horse” etc) with up to 3 other wireless players. Word around the different internet gaming forums is that the wireless mode is well implemented and a lot of fun.

In summary, if you own a PSP and were ever a fan of the Tony Hawk series, I’d definitely suggest checking this game out. It’s a great port of THUG 2 from the Playstation 2 and the developers have done a great job in making sure than none of the aspects of gameplay have been left out. Tony Hawk Underground 2 remix has plenty of levels, modes and hidden extras to keep even the keenest gamer going for quite a while – recommended.
