The Wipeout series has been a mainstay for Sony ever since the release of the original Playstation console. The original Wipeout (from UK software developers Psygnosis) was a PSX launch title back in 1995 and went on to be a massive best-seller. Some 10 years down the track, the latest incarnation of Wipeout joins Sony’s handheld PSP console for its Australian launch.
For anyone familiar with any of the previous Wipeouts,’Wipeout Pure’ is essentially more of the same wrapped up in a much smaller package. For the uninitiated, what you get is a fast-paced futuristic arcade racing game where you control a spacecraft that hovers along a narrow track. The aim of the game is to beat the other competitors (either CPU or human) and progress through the different levels and tracks obtaining gold medals and best lap times. To help you out (or hinder you, depending on the situation), you also have the added bonus of being able to pick up weapons, boosters and shields as you move around the track.
The first thing you notice when loading up Wipeout Pure is how well put together it is – everything from the loading screen and menus through to the game itself is presented beautifully. The design is slick and futuristic. The graphics are colourful and fluid and demonstrate the PSP hardware’s capabilities well – this is a good game to show off to your mates with.
Longevity-wise, Wipeout Pure has quite a number of tracks and five different classes of craft along with several different game play modes. The early tracks and classes are very easy to get through (almost to the point of being slightly boring for anyone who has played Wipeout before) but the game soon picks up speed (and difficulty) later on. You also have the option of wireless mode with up to 8 players, which I haven’t had a chance to try out yet.
Overall, a great game and one you can always come back to for a quick race or two. A return to form for the Wipeout series and certainly a great title to pick up if you are considering taking the plunge on a new PSP console.
