TRAILER: Oliver Stone’s crazed drug cartel movie

As longtime fans will know, Hollywood tearaway Oliver Stone is not one to sugercoat the American Dream. From Platoon to Natural Born Killers to Wall Street, ‘feelgood’ isn’t in his repertoire. In 2012, the director is turning his unhinged eye to the world of drug trafficking with Savages.
Based on Don Winslow’s novel, the film follows a pair of savvy pot dealers and their shared girlfriend (played by Gossip Girl star Blake Lively) who run into some serious trouble from a Mexican drug cartel. Salma Hayek plays the bloody-minded cartel leader, with Benicio Del Toro as her standover man. Can his performance out-crazy Javier Bardem’s portrayal of Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men? Looks like he’s going to give it a shot.
Stone has never been an understated director, and with Savages it looks like he’s going more frenetic than ever. Back in 1983, he wrote the screenplay for Scarface, and there looks to be the same bug-eyed intensity at work here. Special mention has to go to John Travolta, too, as a scenery-chewing DEA agent – it’s the kind of juicy, showboating role he hasn’t taken for a while. So, check it out and see what you think.
It looks like Savages could end up in the same demented category as Stone’s 1994 outing, Natural Born Killers, which has earned a reputation as one of the most controversial films of all time.
