Rick Astley, winner of “Best Act Ever” at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2008, is touring Australian in November!

The Palace Theatre in Melbourne is advertising a show from the 80s pop idol at the end of November and although we obviously feared that the venue was trying to Rickroll everyone when we rang them for confirmation this morning they assured us that it’s NOT a practical joke: “It’s for real… they’re still organising things for it.”

Although he sold over 40 million albums in his heyday and retired from music in 1993 at the age of 27, Astley isn’t just lying at home on a pile of cash these days. The Stock, Aitken, Waterman star returned to the scene in 2004 and has recently been playing shows with his new band The Luddites playing sets that include The Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, T Rex, The Killers and Greenday covers.

Astley is the only male solo artist to have his first 8 singles reach the Top 10 in the UK. His classic hit Never Gonna Give You Up was a #1 hit single in 25 countries and was the eighth highest selling song of 1988 in Australia, just ahead of John Farnham’s Age Of Reason but not quite as good as Robert Palmer’s Simply Irrestiable or Billy Ocean’s Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car.
