Thom Yorke has hinted that Radiohead’s pay-what-you-can release of ‘In Rainbows’ wasn’t necessarily setting a precedent for the band. Rather, “it was a one-off response to a particular situation”.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Yorke suggested they may not return to that landmark model. “It was one of those things where everyone was asking us what we were going to do,” he conceded. “I think it was a one-off response to a particular situation.”
Despite the frontman’s reticence, a number of his contemporaries obviously still like the idea. The free download of Coldplay’s new single Violet Hill made available last week reportedly had 600,000 takers in the first 24 hours.
“I don’t think it would have the same significance now, if we choose to give something away again,” Yorke concluded. “It was a moment in time.”
