Kath & Kim's Sharon goes gay in the USA

You’ve gotta admire Magda Szubanski. She has put her foot down, refusing to allow the American remake of Kath And Kim to feature the character of Sharon Strzelecki. As the character was created by Magda during her work on the show Big Girls’ Blouse it was her decision to make. Early reports speculated that the role would be written as ‘Debbie Cox’, a wildlife preservation worker. However, according to Popbitch, the role will be replaced by a gay man. Oh, the irony.

The American version of Kath And Kim has been two years in the making and from all reports is barely recognisable from the original, causing many to speculate that it will bomb when it hits American screens in October. The US producers have said that the show is not trying to be a copy of the original, it’s a “new imagining”. There have been no announcements as yet regarding casting for the role.
