As we know 2005 was a huge year for blockbuster movies and of course movies with cult followings such as Batman Begins and Sin City. Amongst all of the high budget movies was the sequel to the 2002 smash The Spanish Apartment entitled The Russian Dolls.

The Russian Dolls follows Xavier who has since leaving Spain has become a writer – and not very successful – and still has issues with relationships and love. The movie is based around love and the difficulty of finding love. Shot in Paris, London and St Petersburg this heart warming movie by Director Cedric Klapisch was developed in a way for the audience to become emotionally involved in the lives of the five characters he made famous in The Spanish Apartment.

Some of the characters in this sequel do not have large parts as they did in the previous film. Martine – played by Audrey Tatou – and Xavier are no longer together and she also has a son. We see Xavier move in with Cecile De France’s lesbian character Isabelle. One of the most memorable scenes with Xavier and Isabelle is when Xavier requests that Isabelle acts like his girlfriend, you can actually feel how uncomfortable she is with the entire situation, she then takes him home and puts him in a dress. He also gets punched in the face for disrespecting one of his flings…

There are a lot of editing tricks throughout the movie but Cedric does not go overboard with them so it isn’t very distracting. This is definitely a movie for our generation that shows the difficulties of love and finding what you want in a person, even though some scenes are very cliché’. Russian Dolls is now screening so if you want to watch a heart warming, humorous flick then this is definitely the one to go for.
