(Take 2)

PC-based first-person shooters covering the various wars of the last century have had a popular run over the last few years. We’ve had plenty of World War 2-themed games, modern combat games and a few based on the Vietnam War. Vietcong 2 follows on from the original Vietcong (2003), which was hailed as a tough and realistic first-person shooter with a detailed storyline and authentic weapons. Vietcong reviewed well and was quite popular despite the proliferation of similar titles at the time.

The follow-up title is again set in the Vietnam War period and is fairly unique in that it allows you to play different characters in both the US and Vietnamese armies in single-player story mode. The stories are quite detailed and there are plenty of cut-scenes between the action to keep things rolling along. It’s a nice touch being able to play characters on “both sides of the fence”, but the end result is the same – similar plotlines and endless shooting at faceless enemies.

Gameplay overall is pretty lackluster. There are lots of thought-out features, but the game is incredibly difficult (constant ambushes and friendly soldiers that get in the way) and quite frustrating (being killed by enemy headshots every 30 seconds). It almost seems as though something is missing from the game, despite the developer’s attempts at creating an atmospheric and absorbing title.

The graphics are average compared to other gaming titles currently on the market. Even with all settings on ‘high’, there wasn’t much to look at that would dazzle too many gamers these days. The sound is well done, with realistic gun sounds and background effects. The game’s menu system is simple and well-implemented.

Overall, Vietcong 2 is an average title that is difficult and frustrating to play. Most gamers might find it tedious, but if you are a big fan of war-based first-person shooters and have some spare cash to blow, this might just help to kill a few hours.
