Having already spent exorbitant amounts of time with crazy animated Lego Jedis on the previously released two Star Wars Lego games on Playstation 2, one might ask why I’d be chomping at the bit to revisit the franchise on a new console?
The answer is twofold…or maybe even three fold. Firstly, there’s something undeniably addictive about playing through the Star wars trilogy in its Lego form. Yes, Queen Amidala does look like some strange plastic Kabuki monster and your light saber is looking a little on the stubby side, but these are minor details. The revitalisation of the genre unlocks your inner child with one big wink.
All the hilarity of the previous versions is still apparent, with the usual gems like using the force to make tables and chairs dance.
Secondly, my theory that everything goes better with Wii! Using the Wii remote brings an added element of the interactive to the gameplay. Whether flailing about with your light saber or shooting away with your blaster, there just appears to be another level of fun.
Thirdly, the Wii is best shared as a duo and playing the two player version is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of your best mate. Certainly there are some limitations – like being stuck in character as a non shooting droid when you’re under surprise attack from the Emperor’s minions – but fear not. As in previous versions, the drop in/drop out game play available in two player mode will save you from most jams.
Finally, this incarnation has the added bonus of combining the levels of both Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars II into one solid game, plus some never before included levels such as the pursuit of Bounty Hunter, Zam Wessell, and some new customisation features.
While there are essentially two modes of play – Story and Free Play – you will have to unlock the levels in Story mode before they become available for free play. Leave the cantina with its extremely familiar music and head out through the saga.
From the opening music it’s a Star Wars saga bonanza. Basically beat the crap out of all the Lego bricks you can find, scoot around using the force on any glowing objects to unlock more blocks and the elusive pieces of mini kit which – when collected in full – lead you to unlock the mini kit bonus. There are a number of completion bonuses to keep you plodding along for hours of gaming madness.
Being a secretly massive Star Wars fan, perhaps I’m a little biased, but this game rocks…or should I say blocks?
