San Franciscan label OM further reinforces its claim to having its name listed as being synonymous with funkified excellence in this latest release. Those familiar with the label and its catalogue need I say any more than go and buy this now, you won’t be disappointed. Afro Mystik feature none other than Chris Smith/DJ Fluid, OM owner, on production credits. The band features three soulful singers; Omega, Liana and Gina Rene. On bass is Trevor Dunn from Mr Bungle, on drums Simone White from The Disposable Heroes of Hipocracy, whilst on perussion Carlos Araiza. To some this may represent a mix-mashed all-star lineup, the only name you need remember now though is Afro Mystique.

It seems easy to throw terms like nu-jazz at releases such as this. One listen however and you realise that this is the kind of music that’s not made according to a particular classification. Rather it’s been given such a name for want of a better word. Soulful vocals, percussive beats and funky bass lines all feature strongly throughout, yet at the same time only scratch the surface in the depth of each track.

A tribal feel is present throughout much of the album, giving it definite dancefloor potential. Whether it’s the summery soulful seductiveness of Warm Breeze or the drifting Dreamwalkers the tribal percussiveness gives the tracks a feeling of energy. Especially for the latter of these two tracks the percussive rhythms make it very easy to get lost in amongst the beats. The first single to come off this album, Natural, is characteristic of these tribal beats, soulful vocals and smooth flowing bass lines.

This album is a complete joy to listen to. Whether it’s getting lost swimming amongst the beats, getting drawn along the smooth and funky bass lines or sweetly swooned by the sultry vocalists, it’s all there to be enjoyed and lavished. It ranges from the chilled to the upbeat, always maintaining the core level funkiness inherent throughout the album. Listen to this album many times and I assure you there will be no regret. It’s already become the soundtrack to my Saturday afternoons, late night antics and more…
