(Universal Dance)
Ok, ok, I know what you’re all thinking. With a name like Massive this CD must be cheesy and aimed at the teenybopper fraternity! Well I guess you’d be right in saying that! I was very skeptical about what was going to be on the CD let alone what I’d be able to write about. Being a person with a very open mind I decided to embrace it with as much of an unprejudiced view point as possible. I tried several times to find some good qualities within the cd but struggled early, but by the end I believed I had something positive to write about.
As soon as I loaded the CD into my player I was confronted with the almost annoying sounds of the southland group collectively know as Big Bro (Nu Flow). A tune that may be ok to hear from time to time but the remix of this track just didn’t grow on me at all… an attempt at what resembles breaks but just doesn’t quite make the grade. It toddles on and progress’s to tracks like In-Grid – You Promised Me and Tim Deluxe – It Just Won’t Do, with disc one culminating with the Rogue Traders – One of My Kind, not a bad track listing by any means However the fact that the cover says DJ MIXED in bold is probably an insult to anyone who has ever graced a set of decks. There is severe need for this person (whom remains nameless on the cd which is probably lucky for them) to learn how to mix songs as it gets quite frustrating at times listening to the mixes.
After the first CD I didn’t hold out much hope for the second CD. I was safe to trust my instincts. Delta Goodrem greeted me with a remix of Born to Try, a track that by no means has any bad qualities for the singer but it seems this remix was just put out to sell singles. The pace quickens on this second disc and is a lot more of what I came to expect from this style of CD. The mixing is a little better than the first CD and the tunes seem to meld together a lot better than on the first disc. There is a more commercial club uplifting anthem style that flows on the second disc with tracks like Shiny Disco Balls, Love Inc You’re A Superstar, Damaged – Plummet and Flip and Fill’s – Shooting Star. I was also surprised to hear a remake of the old Zander song What’s Up, one I hadn’t heard since time of primary school about 12 years ago.
By the end of disc two it has moved into a far more trancey state of mind however a little light on, a bit of a recovery from what I was dreading to have to write about originally. However as I said its not what I’d personally go out and buy in a store but it may be one for the little sister or niece for a birthday present or those who like the commercial radio station style mix up shows! Out of ten I’d rate it 3 and a half!
