Jori Hulkkonen from Finland presents 3 interestingly programmed tech/house/electro treats on “Straight over the counter”, his latest EP.
The first track “Karppa” opens with the unmistakable sounds of funky tech house. A deep bubbly bass line keeps the track moving while weird pitch shifts create most of the variety. This track is very minimal, the sounds reminded me of early Jeff Mills techno sounds. It also samples the popular laugh from Carl Cox’s techno release “Tribal Jedi”. While the track begins with a 4/4 beat it changes throughout to a weird shuffled tech beat and more pads join the original techy sound.
On the flip there are two individual tracks of tech and electro. “Sons of Soong” is mechanical sounding tech house; I found this track to be very full within the mix. Layers of percussion, open high hats and a funky revolving bass line keep the track moving. Tech/Jazz stabs emerge throughout the meat of the track along with some good tech deep sound effects. A minimal kick build introduces the weird electronic break, which drops back into, essentially, the same track as before the break. I found this track to be pretty catchy even tho it doesn’t really change much through the mix.
The final track on this EP is “Am-I-Z?” an electro track with a wiggly 303 bass line that doesn’t do too much. I found this track to be a little boring as the 303 continues throughout the whole track with not much change other than an increase in resonance. There are some nice string lines, a vocal sample and great deep bass line that kicks in later in the track but all in all I found this track to be very simple and not very inspiring. Overall the EP is very entertaining and there is something on there for anyone interested in weird teched up beats.
