(FMR/Tommy Boy)
From the brilliant, engaging, SBS tv drama series Queer As Folk, Tommy Boy Entertainment gives you the third season soundtrack! The soundtracks to each season of QAF has had its own feel. First season was happy-go-lucky, fun and blatantly camp. Second season soundtrack was fantastic and more grown up club music. This third season is different. Two cds each with its distinct and different feel. The first is typically camp and pumpin’ and the second is more emotional and pensive. The executive producers consider this a musical representation of the external (disc 1) and internal (disc 2) landscape of Queer As Folk.
I don’t know what it is about gay music, but it really moves the heart and rocks the pelvis. And any gay man will tell you that good dancing is about moving the hips in time with the beat. The execs describe this beat as “that gay thumpa-thumpa – you know, the erotic, tribal throbbing beat” – that you feel in your ears when every cell in your body is stimulated! What I love about camp music is its raw energy – so turn up the volume and dance like you’re the most gorgeous go-go boy at Babylon nightclub!
Some Lovin’ by Murk vs Kristine W will sure get some airplay in the clubs, perhaps even warrant a drag show. It’s very beat-heavy – sounds like a groaning elephant, if you can imagine what that sounds like. Commercial and cheezy – yeah! Kristine W’s vocals are powerful and fantastic! Check out the clip on disc 2 of her and the QAF cast dancing up a storm. Iio gets a spot with their global hit At The End, the Scumfrog remix to keep with the grown-up feeling. Not much to say but this track is a winner. Never [Past Tense] (Tiesto mix) by Roc Project feat. Australia’s Tina Arena is one of the best vocal trance tracks I’ve heard in a long time. I think this song aired towards the end of an episode when Justin walks away from Brian – but anyway, when I heard it I thought – what is this song?!!! There is a dreamy water-like thudding beat that drives this song straight to the heart, besides the lyrics of course. It’s highly textured, got superb vocals, changing emotions and a wicked thumping fuck-me-one-last-time beat.
Gioia provides another strong female vocal track. From The Inside (Junior Vasquez mix) is a good build-up song to this crackpot. I have never heard a Yoko Ono track before in my life, but this Walking On Thin Ice (Danny Tenaglia club mix) is a ripper! You can feel the pace pick up with the drums marching into the vocals, which are funny and er… unique. I’ve never come across a song where nonsensical shouts have been a valuable asset. “Aigh!” Bring it oooooon. This is so infectious… can imagine lots of people bouncing and nodding to the beat. The mixing into the next track is dramatic and we shift up a gear – “damn, I feel the heat!” Native Love by Divine is very 80s and very camp. So all you scene queens, push attitude to full throttle cuz this song is conducive to hip-swaying and actions.
The Cha Cha song – Viva Colombia by Namtrak is sexy and fun, more housey and Latin-y. Ends on an abrasive note with an interesting mix of Cassius’s The Sound Of Violence – this mix absolutely desecrates the track!
Disk 2 is great! There are only 6 tracks but is chockablock full of good music. Some rock, some easy listening, some alternative. My faves are the Sneaker Pimps who get the ball rollin with Loretta Young Silks which has a fabulous chorus that screams and yearns for love. Soundtrack Of Our Lives have a cool track in Infra Riot which lets off a bit of steam. Underworld chills proceedings with Sola Sistim. Broken Social Scene provides an emotional and pensive end with Lover’s Spit. It sounds like U2 meets Coldplay, actually! Hah!
Overall, this is a fabulous soundtrack! It’s been getting a lot of bedroom-play at my place. Whatever mood you’re in, there’s song here to complement it.
