Meem is a rising star in the Australian dance music underground. The Big Hoo-Hah is his third album and follows his acclaimed Yum Yum and Miffy album. Meem has worked on the tracks for The Big Hoo-Hah over the past three years resulting in feel-good jackin bass driven funk… real party music to keep the ambience buoyant and trendy.

Meem started his career off in Canberra way back in 1995 performing as a live minimal electronic act. Moving to Sydney in 1997, Meem’s sound has constantly been evolving through the minimal electro-tech sound of Machine’s & Records, the injection of the more organic jazz and funk with Yum Yum and Miffy finally ending up with The Big Hoo-Hah – the most soulful, funk-driven installment yet. Meem currently resides in the beautiful and atmospheric Blue Mountains.

Regulars of the successful Superpeople parties hosted on Saturday nights at the CBD Hotel Sydney would be familiar with some of the tracks from The Big Hoo-Hah. Not only has Meem DJed there but produced the material from the event’s first vinyl release Superpeople Presents: Meem (Limited Edition) (a four track sampler of The Big Hoo-Hah). Many will recall that Meem’s sound complimented perfectly their experience of Superpeople with it’s brash, funky and energetic flavors.

Getting down to the tracks, the remix of Fuuirm up is a breakin soulful affair with its funky bassline akin to that of Yello undergoing a manic episode. Em Sum Kipp features The Big Hoo-Hah’s signature dominating bottom-end this time with the breakbeat sped up a notch, guaranteed to rouse the listener into an eventful moment.

Undoubtedly, Doent U Be Afraid stands out as a real downbeat gem on this release with its soulful cut-up vocals and smooth creeping bassline reminiscent to the backing track to an early 90’s West coast gangster rap groove. You just can’t help waiting out for Snoop Doggy to sleaze in spelling out his name and bustin’ out some rhymes glorifying materialism and reducing women down to their breast-sizes…

With Yum Yum and Miffy Meem undertook Australia’s most ambitious and labour-intensive CD covers in history by individually sanding, staining, glueing, assembling, stamping and numbering each of 500 wooden cases himself for it’s initial release. In this tradition the first 500 copies of The Big Hoo-Hah are encased in a cotton and felt CD pouch intended to dust and polish the CD every time it is pulled from it case (i.e. “Stay-Shiny Technology”!).

The Big Hoo-Hah is a highly consistent collection of feel-good rhythms to set an unavoidable funky groove for even the most resilient listeners. The Big Hoo-Hah hits the stores on 25th August after Meem launches the album at the Gaelic Club on Saturday the 23rd August where he also commences a tour of the East coast.
