(Renaissance/Stomp/EQ)

This latest release on the Renaissance label comes courtesy of one of the most respected internationals in the prog-house scene: Sander Kleinenberg, and is titled ‘Everybody’. Originating from Holland Kleinenberg lives in the city of Hauge in the South of Holland; known as the political center of The Netherlands. This city is also the location where some of the most dance floor devastating Dutch dance-music is being produced by names such as Pako & Frederik & Vincent de Moor. The sound can be described as sparse, banging, and soulful that is spliced up carefully by well placed melodies. Having started DJ-ing in 1987 at the age of 15, Sander has a wealth of experience at the decks and over the years has been heavily involved in production on a number of labels and remix work for artists like Oliver Lieb, Destinys Child and Junkie XL. With such an amazing list of achievements expectations from fans were high and I am fairly sure they will be met easily if not greatly surpassed.

The discs are labelled Attempt One and Attempt Two obviously part of the generally fun aspect of this compilation, including the funky cover art which has a ‘scrunched-up’ paper look. Many of Sander’s recent sets have started off with a warm house vibe and then slowly work there way into some harder and tougher sounds and this is true of this compilation. The first disk starts off with a spoken intro with two lads making their way to a club night and then smoothly kicks straight into the funky crisp percussion of Solaris Heights – Midnight. The mood for the first few tracks is funky and atmospheric with tracks such as Greed & Van Bellen – City Lights and the tribal goodness of Indart meets Plaza Crew – In Destiny.

Despite the delicate funky start to the compilation, about half way through the cd an onslaught of huge progressive tracks begins. With huge rolling and intense bass lines taking the spotlight the cd peaks with massive tunes such as the dirty sounds of Pig & Dan – Addiction, and amazing sound of Australia’s own producer Luke Chable & Bonnici – Ride. The cd concludes with the contemplative and atmospheric track by Mathew Dekay – Higher Thoughts.

Disk two fires up and moves to a tougher house sound that dabbles in electro sounds with tasty tunes such as Joakim – Come Into My Kitchen & Seelenuft – Manila (Ewan Pearson Remix). The disc is similar to the first only in the way that it carefully builds an amazing vibe that slowly grows stronger and stronger in intensity. Towards the tail end of this mix some huge tracks with a massive party sound are introduced with the highlights including the electro vocoder madness and warm gushing synth sounds of DJ Chab – My Memory and the big beats and spatial sounds of Steve Porter – Definite Form. The end of the cd is predominantly progressive with a melodic flavour and concludes with an interesting reprise version of Loway – 2 Bags of Grass and Sander’s own tune Repeat to Specify.

Overall, this compilation definitely showcases Sander Kleinenberg’s amazing ability that is demonstrated often in his live sets to combine and draw from so many different styles of dance music and build a huge party sound that evolves throughout the set. Each of the cd’s is slightly different, but they both share a tasty array of beats combined with an atmospheric, uplifting prog-house and prog-trance sound that tease the listener as they build higher and higher until the final track. This cd is guaranteed to cop a beating in the cd player and the inclusion of plenty of obscure tracks ensures its longevity. After the amazing releases by both Zabiela and Holden in quick succession this year, this one is a ‘must buy’ for house and progressive lovers alike. Sander is currently touring to promote this release and will be playing in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as part of the Renaissance tour.
