It is probably not an unfair call to say that anyone who has gone out and partied in the extremely diverse dance scene of the last 10 years has had a special Underworld moment. Two of their massive hits which have been around for a while: Rez & Born Slippy have both been responsible for many of these moments whether it they be in a small club or in a stadium with thousands of other punters. The latter of these anthems has been remixed a countless number of times but to commemorate the tracks anniversary a 2003 Remixes single of Born Slippy has also been recently released.

This release spanning two disks and sixteen tracks celebrates their long and successful career in the dance scene and their unbelievable ability to produce world renowned anthems. Underworld currently consists of Rick Smith and Karl Hyde, whilst once the group was a trio including Darren Emerson. The tracks on this release have been chosen by Steve Hall who is JBO’s head honcho and attempts to accurately summarise the group’s musical achievements throughout this period.

The first disc represents the early times of the group where they started to make a significant impact on the dance scene at the time and achieved quite good publicity and reviews all round. The first track is the epic journey of Big Mouth which is followed by the feisty and amazing sounds of Dirty, both bringing out the mid ninties techno sound. Other highlights include the amazing percussion of Mmmm Skyscraper and Hyde’s unmistakable vocals in Dirty Epic. The biggest and most recognisable tune on the first disk is of course Rez, a classic tune that is still copping plays at club nights around the world.

The second disk kicks off with another one of their anthems: Cowgirl. This disk focuses on more recent tracks produced by the group and including several key tunes from the Beaucoup Fish album of 1999 which was the last album to feature input from Emmerson before he left the group. The second track is the track known by all, which is of course Born Slippy. Other highlight tunes include Pearls Girl and 8 Ball that highlight that the group can produce a variety of sounds. The disc finishes with their latest anthem Two Months Off with its unmistakable vocals and banging beat it is a spectacular finish to this amazing collection.

Overall, the compilation is a quality banging release which when you listen to it will be hard to resist bopping away to the banging beats within Rick Smith and Karl Hyde’s productions. It is great that Rez is included for the first time in any of their studio albums and this is highly recommended and a must have collectable for any Underworld fans. If you only know a few of their bigger anthems you may also discover some new favourite tracks hidden throughout this double cd.
