(Shock/Freefall)
After a three year hiatus from the scene the time is perfect for this release, breaks are huge internationally and Soma Rasa produce them at there chunky squelchy best as this five track teaser/EP shows, we in Australia are a talented bunch.
Formed in 97 in the fair city of Brisvegas Soma Rasa quickly found success touring with the one and only Fatboy Slim as well as playing the festival circuit throughout Australia. After dropping their debut long player 2000’s I Mix Therefore I am the boys however decided they needed a break taking a self imposed break, until now. With the breaks sound taking off world wide and with their enthusiasm and creativity refreshed they have returned and the result is the very impressive On the Run.
More of a teaser (OK an EP) than a long player this is a excellent snippet to catch the public’s interest garner some radio/dancefloor play and keep their names in the air. Opening with Something Wicked this is funky breaks the way it should be done the bass making your head snap the electro is synth lines effective and the female vocal catchy without being overpowering it is track you could imagine getting some summer spins. Track two is I Like It a more house tinged groove still featuring the funk of a breaks track with a catchy sample this has already received airplay on the J’s and is likely to be recognised by many a dancefloor warrior. Track three and the break is slowed given a Hip Hop vibe and sure enough the vocal follows as DNO rhymes all over the track but complements rather than detracts from the funky style of bass. The title track On The Run is next as a smooth house bassline and vocal are complimented by some dope scratches and breaks that could see this work well in either a house or breaks set. Finally we have Slow leaning more to the breaks side there are some subtle house influences over the beat and with the vocal again enabling DJ’s from a number of genre to pack it in their crate.
This is an excellent sampler as the boys come off almost in the league of Nubreed and when you get to that level we are talking world class. I am eagerly anticipating the full length player that hopefully follows in the not to distant future and I would suspect a subsequent world wide from the group known as Soma Rasa.
