Over the last six years German producer/DJ Tomcraft aka Thomas Brückner has reached success with hits like ‘The Mission’, ‘Silence’ and ‘Loneliness’. Being synonymous with a sound dubbed electro/trance, Tomcraft’s new single ‘Brainwashed’ leans towards commercial electro than anything trance.

The song is fairly disjointed, mainly due to the use of randomly themed phone samples that, although they refrain from being too annoying, imbue the track with a cheesy value. The Radio edit uses the classic sounding Tomcraft electro break-beat. It is so similar to ‘Loneliness’ that it practically is the same beat. Even the synths are reminiscent of Tomcraft’s usual work. Just about the only difference between this and the Video Edit is the use of a house beat instead of a broken beat.

The UK Club Mix is still a copy of the first two, trying to pass itself off as a remix but in reality it is just a blend of the house version and the breaks version. Finally we’re blessed with a breath of fresh air when the Laurent Konrad Mix comes around. Female vocals feature instead of the already used-to-death male vocals although some parts sound out of time. The use of what could be called an electro/trance synth makes this remix the most danceable.

The phone samples are better integrated into the Original Club Mix, giving it more flow but again it is hard to differentiate this mix from the first three. ‘Brainwashed’ will gain commercial success but probably won’t do much in the dance scene. The track hasn’t shown any growth in Tomcraft’s production. It only presents a sound that has been used too much for commercial success.
