Over the past few years Losty has established himself as one of Sydney’s most dynamic club MCs, roaming far from behind the DJs decks to incite hip hop and breakbeat dance floor madness with his fast paced lyrical flow at events such as Utopia, the Big Day Out, and at his weekly residency at sublime@home; and with his debut Land of the Lost EP Losty excels with dynamic rhymes and flow over some seriously catchy beats.

Across the EP’s five tracks Losty showcases a style that is undoubtedly Australian hip hop with flair and style, and possessive of an attitude that is seeking to get a message out, yet doesn’t get caught up in its own self importance.

From the Introduction Losty delivers bragging rhymes – “Losty! yeah that’s me / and maybe I’m going home with the lady / that you call baby / the one MC you know who it be / cheeky Mr. Losty” – which blend deftly into positive messages of intention – “I’m anti war, anti negative / we’ve all got the right to live / so peace is my prerogative”.

In this way Losty is able to afford himself the moniker of being ‘cheeky’ without being unnecessarily boastful throughout the EP, balancing his bragging rhymes with positive messages. On the beats are D.C and Sydney breakbeat DJ Elroy, who have put together a foundation of catchy electro tinged hip hop beats which you’ll find yourself humming under your breath or running through your head long after the cd stops.

All the tracks on the EP are solid in production and vibe, making personal taste the only disseminator in choosing your favourite. My personal favourite has to be Story So Far, where the MC cuts loose over a smooth landscape of acoustic guitar loops layered with pan flutes – producing the most honest and open of the EPs five tracks.

In a style evocative of Eminem he flows almost effortlessly and honestly whilst the music glides beneath him – Was always too intense for every girl I ever met / but sometimes motivation is disguised in the form of regret – in a voice you can hear the honesty behind. The hooks and choruses are catchy without being commercial, the rhymes are both bragging and insightful, and the tracks have both surface appeal and real depth. Losty’s EP manages to blend the line between all these factors very deftly, and in so doing has created an EP which can bear repeating many times.
