(Soma)
As a title track to his debut album, Thirteen, Master H showcases some funky funky house with a little help from the Soma label stalwarts Silicone Soul. With amazing album reviews from everyone from DJ Magazine to URB, Master H is quickly becoming recognised as one of the new faces of funky house production and DJing.
The Original starts with soft noises of outdoors (i.e. crickets and other insects), and then a really driving bassline kicks over the top to get things properly started. No more than 64 bars later, additional low-end frequencies are layered, and then the funky dancefloor friendly groove busts out. It is seriously funky and batty, but the fun vibe created by the building piano is undeniable. High pitched chords come over the top, and make the track peak even further, and then all of a sudden almost everything besides the bass kick drops out and the track is over. If you are a Silicone Soul fan, you will notice a little sample towards the end that is straight from the classic Chic-o-laa.
Mylo, ‘the scottish answer to Royksopp,’ gets remix duties and begins things with a electro-house bassline, but keeps the funky chord patterns and vocal snippets. Overall it just has a filtered ‘dirty’ sound to it, but majority remains the same in the Mylo Vocal, and the Mylo Dub gets rid of the vocal samples. The Mylo Vocal mix will probably go better in terms of dancefloor, and the Mylo Dub gets my vote, but there is no doubt Mylo has turned Thirteen into a 80’s disco hit filled with funky filtered grooves.
With support from Ian Pooley to Phil Kieran, this is bound to be big on every funky house dancefloor around the world!
