Detroit natives, the Detroit Grand Pubahs gained notoriety in 2001 with the release of their track Sandwiches off their debut album Funk All Y’all. Sandwiches blasted up most of the key DJ Buzz charts worldwide launching it into the Billboard dance charts and the UK Top20 sales charts.

Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus is their follow-up album and it is a solid one at that. It is full of catchy sleazy electronic sounds to both hang out and get psyched up to. The DSPs meld ghetto-tech, minimal techno, in a P-Funk kinda way in order to create a unique piece of work that achieves a sweet groove with a wacky cheeky urban edge. This album is much much more than its awesome cosmic porno cover art.

God  Imposters is an effective P-Funk inspired jam, while the slo-mo Tig O’ Bake Fitties takes the P-Funk spirit and mashes it with wild Joe Satriani style mad guitar solos and cosmic soul-blues synth solos. Vocalist Paris The Black Fu asks ‘where have all the real titties gone?’ Yes, a question often pondered by the modern urban male…

While on the whole the ghetto-tech genre is considered by many to be a little low brow, the DSPs hybrid is more palatable for a wider audience but still maintains an underground spunk. Definition of Sick is an effective minimal ghetto-tech journey, while Freak features a catchy live vocal and guitar stabs. Weed In The Kitchen is a dubby affair and its groove is accentuated well by the vocal loop ‘where my weed at? Where my hoes at?’.

The two singles released so far from Galactic Ass Creatures, The Clapper and Big Onion, are both given more of a minimal tech edge.

Overall, Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus is rock solid and is among the cream of current dance releases on offer.
