(Simple/Inertia)
Will Saul recently came into the limelight thanks to a rather huge remix of his Cliff track by Australia’s own Infusion. Since then he has released a mix album, and one other production effort – featured on Danny Howell’s recent GU album. Malfunction is his latest release, yet again on his own Simple label.
The original starts with a really simple breakbeat, and then gradually develops into a dark monster with layers of echo-filled chords, subtle fx, and solid solid beats. Once it builds, it gets you waiting for the peak, but it just drops out in a very mediocre way – and then it’s simply a wind-down out of the track. A decent track, but it really lacks in the breakdown.
Meat Katie gets remix duties, and quickly adds in one of his trademark cut-up vocal loops, while also giving the whole tune a much more solid sound. Sharp synths give it real dancefloor appeal, and it’s definitely the kind of great squelchy breaks sound we come to expect from Mark Pember.
Both sides of the record offer nothing really new or different, but the Meat Katie mix shows some quality nu-skool breaks.
