(Warp/Inertia)
Punk-funk/Dance crossover band !!! or ‘ChkChkChk’ can do wrong right now and their new single ‘Hello? Is This Thing On?’ will do nothing to shake off their growing fan base and critical acclaim.
One of the standout tracks on their standout album ‘Louden Up Now’, ‘Hello? Is This Thing On?’ is produced by British left-field electronic music master Maurice Fulton. Combine !!!’s catchy edgy approach with Fulton’s earthy and quirky touches and you have one tasty little number.
Compared to the last two singles (i.e. ‘Me and Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard’ and ‘Pardon My Freedom’), ‘Hello?’ offers a deeper and more laidback groove using a wider variety of instruments.
Thomas N’ Eric’s Rub and Tug Throwdown remix of ‘Hello?’ sounds like it has been inspired by Theo Parrish with its rolling dubby repetitive bassline with the vocal ‘hey’ creeping in and out. Nice, creepy and atmospheric and well recommended.
Justin Van Der Volgen’s remix of ‘Sunday 5:17am’ sounds a little like Peter Gabriel after his sound has been sleazed up and twisted about. This track is one that gets better after a few listens.
