(Subliminal/Stomp)

This latest addition to the Subliminal Sessions series titled ‘Bambossa Sessions – Dirty House Music’ takes the release count to volume seven and is brought to you by US house legend Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero. Technically an amazing DJ, Romero’s extensive knowledge of house music and access to great new underground tracks makes this a must have compilation for any lover of dirtier house sounds that still retain a funky edge. The release features some of the latest new house releases as well as many unreleased tunes which Harry uses to lay down a rocking mix throughout both discs of the compilation. Known as one of the exclusive residents at Pacha, Ibiza, alongside Erick Morillo and Josh Wink; Romero is also heavily involved in house production with several of his tracks and collaborations featuring on this compilation.

The first disk kicks off with Jark Prongo – Body & Soul which provides a cruisy intro that leads into several groove driven tech-house tunes. Each of the tracks builds upon the previous including Josh Wink – Fill Me With Acid which is a highlight with its cheeky percussion and squeaky 303 style patterns. One of Romero’s productions, Be The One (Dub), is also a highlight featuring Shawnee Taylor on vocals. This tune lays down some punchy bass and many layers of chugging tribal percussion through some huge build-ups. Other highlights include the dirty but frighteningly clever vocal cuts of Jose Nunez – Bilingual which simply has to be heard to be believed and the rocking sounds of Cajmere Feat. Walter Phillips ‘Midnight’.

The second disk features some dance floor killers in the first half of the cd but then seems to taper off in intensity towards the end. Some of the highlight tunes on this disc include the tidy MCing and raw house sounds featured in Morillo Feat. Audio Bullys – Break Down The Doors (HCCR Vocal Mix). The booming deep sub basses and dark synth line of Erick Morillo, Harry Romero & Jose Nunez Feat. Jessica Eve – Dancin. Crystal Method makes an appearance in the mix with the Eric Morillo remix of Born Too Slow. Romero’s latest production is also a gem, titled Machine Control (Remix), is full of tough dirty percussion and stomping bass.

Overall this is a fantastic compilation of deep, dark and dirty house music. The music seems to have this cool sultry feel and yet grooves along with a good measure of funk all the way through. The first disk is my favourite of the two and is chock full of tasty bass lines and funky percussion, the second has some standout tracks but the second half of the disk loses a bit of the party vibe he had built up in the mix. Harry Romero with be touring to celebrate the release of the next in this successful series of compilation cd’s throughout the world this summer. Confirmed gigs include festivals such as Global Gathering and Creamfields in the UK. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves deep and dirty house in the style of Cattaneo, Eric Morillo and Steve Lawler; this one will be in your cd player for weeks!
