This compilation reaffirms the belief that large production companies still think that dance music is about how many units you shift and not about quality. Well ok – maybe that was a bit harsh, but why else would anybody put Kool and the Gang, Savage Garden and 98 Degrees on a dance music compilation? It’s pretty much a sure thing that it will be commercially viable. It’s a patchworked selection of tasteless pop and dancefloor fillers.
An extended version of Storm’s Time to Burn that’s heavy on the synth and 303 still sounds tremendous even if it’s old. There’s a brief foray into Garage with feel good tracks like Girls Like Us by B15 project and Crazy Love by MJ Cole. Also there’s that Timo Maas Remix of Azzido Da Bass Dooms Night that still sounds just as deep and funky as ever.
On CD two there are a few gems amongst a minefield – Fat Boy Slim Sunset (Bird of Prey), Sonique’s Sky and Bomfunk MC’s Freestyla.
So select your tracks and put them on repeat, this compilation isn’t one you’d want to play from start to finish.
