When I saw Carl Cox and Darren Emerson play at the BDO earlier this year there were two tracks that stuck in my mind. Wack Ass M.F. was one and My Beat was the other. Enough said? – perhaps not!
I now have the pleasure of reviewing the single, with no less than five mixes, one of which happens to be a garage mix (Yes, I think this is a good thing!).
The familiar dirty edits feature the funkiest stutter you are ever gonna hear! Sure you can debate all day what a wack ass motherfucker means, but in the end who cares! This song sounded dirty and funky when Carl Cox first played it way back then and it still sounds the same now.
The Eat This! mix on the other hand is reminiscent of an 80’s style clubbing flashback, which slowly toughens up as is goes. In the end though, it just seems a little boring for me.
The hidden gold on this disc is the Genius Cru remix. It starts off with a funky breaks intro and then spits out some fat bass that starts humming along. The familiar garage touch of keyboard plonking adds a bit of variety, but bass is the word on this one peoples! I can’t wait to hear this particular mix in a club or even on a compilation.
Of course there is also the clean mix, but really…who cares!
Wack Ass M.F. is a great track – one of the most memorable of early 2001 for sure.
