Flesh is Jan Johnston’s debut single released through Perfecto Records. The genre is progressive trance and the CD single features 4 tracks: the Oakenfold radio edit, Tilt’s Going Home Dub mix, DJ Tiesto mix and Tilt’s Going Home mix. These last two mixes were featured on the vinyl release, which has been available in Australia for over a month.
You know you’re in progressive trance territory when you see Tiesto’s name on the packaging. Co-written with BT, and featuring Jan’s lyrics, the track is a trancefest of euphoric synths and driving basslines, with piano over the top. The lyrics are catchy and not too inane. Jan’s vocals are exquisite, which explains why BT loves to work with her. Some of BT’s songs that feature Jan’s vocals are “Calling your name”, “Mercury and Solace” and “Remember”. She’s also the voice of Freefall’s “Skydive”.
Of the 4 versions on the CD, the standout one has to be the Tilt Going Home Mix. If you prefer the over-the-top synth sound that is Dutch trance, then Tiesto is your man. This is a quality release, so pick it up if you enjoy progressive trance. Jan has an album due out in July on Perfecto, “Emerging”. Several other dance remixes of tracks on this album will follow.
