(Phonetic/EMI)
I was looking forward to hearing another Max Linen track, after hearing the big-room tribal (albeit cheesy) sounds of ‘Soul Shaker’, but oh how wrong I was. Reading the back of the vinyl cover had me worried right off, as it told about a singer that who was tripping at Frankie Knuckles warehouse parties.. yada yada yada.. and they “thought this’d make a great story”...
...but unfortunately Flashback is one of the worst tracks I’ve heard in a long time. There are some of his tribal sounds in the track, although they are quite hard to pick out, as all you hear are sirens and ridiculously cheesy sounds of batty house. Sure the music is bad, but it would have been ten times better if they didn’t include the obnoxious MC talking about that wonderful night in Chicago. Word by word this guy takes us through him looking for his wife in the club, getting a glass of spiked punch, and tripping out at the warehouse parties in 1986. Truly mesmerizing stuff.
Even a Ramirez remix can’t help this track out, but the Instrumental clears itself of the vocals at least. Definitely up there with the worst of the past twelve months.
