(Unique/Creative Vibes)
Hailing from a small village in Germany after which he chose to name himself, Malente is a man who knows party music when he hears is and this album is full of his trademark funk.
The opening track is the radio hit “We came to party” is a sure fire dancefloor winner with it’s infectious and upbeat title strewn throughout and a funk fuelled bassline. It’s a big track to open with and gives high hopes for the rest of the album to be just as catchy and “The fever” follows up nicely, not quite as “hands in the air” dancefloor fodder as it’s predecessor but just as bouncy and the chorus line “lets dance I know you got the fever” pretty much sums up the whole ethos of the album, listening to this with your feet not tapping I dare say would be a near on impossible feat.
“Overkill” featuring Weedy Gonzales pumps up the electro element and turns down the “party” atmosphere a little but that’s ok because the next few tracks have that in spades. ”Till I die” has an electro boogey feel and on tracks like “Ska Wars” Percussion and horns are prevalent giving that happy, street party type vibe, you can almost see all the happy shining people holding hands.
“Sweet soul music” shifts away from that sound and moves into old school funk, just sped up a notch to keep the body moving. “Mind your head” slows it right down with gravelly vocals over lounge room tunes it seems to be winding the album down and “Phat Thai” takes it even deeper with the sound of old crackly vinyl faintly discernable and enchanting vocals.
But then just when you think its going to be a sleepy little finish to an album that started off with such a big punch he drops “Nu jazz go home” and you are suddenly blessed with the best track yet, pumping beats, crunchy guitar sounds and an almost devilish tone telling you he “wants to rock” it’s a steller end to a superb album.
Party music for party people and a damn fine DJ to boot, Malente nails it on this re release, designed to give him more exposure than his first to albums garnered when they first hit the public. If you missed him the first two times round don’t miss this mashup of all things breakbeat-electro-house-funk and fun.
